Latest Prices of Vervain Seeds and a Detailed Guide to Growing Them
Vervain, also known as wild catnip, agrimony, and phoenix-neck grass, is a perennial upright herbaceous plant of the genus Verbena in the family Verbenaceae. It mostly grows in the wild and is distributed across most of East China, South China, and Southwest China. The whole plant is used medicinally to cool the blood and dissipate stasis, promote menstruation and clear heat, detoxify and relieve itching, and expel parasites and relieve bloating. Now let us take a look at the price of vervain seeds and how to grow them!
How much is a jin of vervain seeds?
The price of vervain seeds is about 120 to 180 yuan per jin, but prices vary greatly depending on seed quality, variety, place of origin, and market conditions. Vervain is commonly propagated by seed. It prefers a dry, sunny environment and is not demanding about soil. It likes fertilizer and moisture, fears waterlogging, and is not tolerant of drought. It can grow in ordinary soil, but grows most vigorously in deep, fertile loam and sandy loam, and low-lying, easily waterlogged land is not suitable for planting.
Propagation methods for vervain
1. Site selection and land preparation: For raising vervain seedlings, choose loam or sandy loam with a thicker soil layer as the planting site. Plow to a depth of 18 to 25 cm, spread 2000 to 2500 kg of fully decomposed farmyard manure per mu as base fertilizer, and make beds 50 cm wide at the top and 15 cm high. Rake the bed surface level and leave a working path of 25 to 30 cm between two beds. Small field ridges can also be made.
2. Sowing method: The sowing time for vervain is from late April to early May, sown in drills. First rake the soil on the bed surface fine, open furrows along the bed 5 cm from the bed edge, with a row spacing of 25 to 30 cm and a furrow depth of 15 to 2 cm. Tread the bottom flat, then apply a small amount of biological fertilizer as base fertilizer at 15 to 20 kg per mu. Cover the fertilizer with a little soil, sow the seeds evenly, cover with soil 1 to 1.5 cm thick, and press lightly. Use 0.5 kg of seed per mu.
How to grow vervain
1. Thinning and transplanting: Vervain seedlings emerge 10 to 20 days after sowing. Thin when the plants are 5 cm tall. It is not necessary to deliberately leave a single row, but the spacing between plants in each row should be kept at about 10 cm. The seedlings removed by thinning can be transplanted again.
2. Timely weeding: Weeding vervain is routine work in field management, and preventing weed overgrowth is one of the effective measures for increasing yield. Therefore, weeds should be removed as soon as they appear, keeping the field free of weeds.
3. Drainage and watering: Vervain likes moisture, fears waterlogging, and is not tolerant of drought. When the soil is too dry, water promptly to ensure the needs of normal plant growth, and pay attention to field drainage during the rainy season.
4. Timely loosening of the soil: When growing vervain, loosen the soil in time to prevent the surface soil from becoming compacted and affecting plant growth. Loosening the soil both increases soil permeability and reduces the occurrence of disease.
5. Pest and disease control: Root rot occurs in vervain when there is prolonged heavy water accumulation in the field. It can be avoided simply by draining and loosening the soil in time. For chemical control, irrigate the roots with a 500 to 600 times dilution of 50% carbendazim.
6. Seed field management: Good seeds are the basic condition for obtaining a high yield in vervain, so a separate seed field should be established, with a plant spacing of 15 to 20 cm and a row spacing of 20 to 25 cm. Strengthen field management and appropriately increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before flowering.
7. Seed harvesting: When 75 to 80% of the vervain seeds are mature, cut the plants, place them in a well-ventilated shady spot for 4 to 6 days, then thresh. Remove all impurities and shriveled seeds, dry in the sun for 3 to 4 days, then put them into clean cloth bags and store them in a ventilated warehouse.
