Gentian, also known as gentian flower, bitter gall grass, mountain gentian and so on, is a perennial herb of the genus Gentiana in the family Gentianaceae. It often grows in hillside grasslands, roadsides, riverbanks, thickets, forest edges and under forests, and meadows. Its roots and rhizomes are used as medicine, and its effect of purging excess fire of the liver and gallbladder is very strong, and it can also calm wind, stop spasms and relieve pain. Now let us take a look at the price of gentian seeds and the planting methods!

How much is a jin of gentian seeds?

The price of gentian seeds is about 120 to 160 yuan per jin, but prices vary greatly depending on seed quality, variety, place of origin and market conditions. The annual growth period of gentian is about 180 to 210 days. Under natural conditions, it blooms in early August, and the flowering period is relatively long, opening successively downward from the top of the inflorescence. The seeds also gradually mature, and mature seeds scatter out from the crack at the tip of the capsule. Therefore, in early August, when the tip of the capsule cracks, they can be harvested. After drying, the seeds are shaken out and stored in a low-temperature, dry place.

Sowing methods for gentian

1. Autumn sowing: Gentian is generally sown in November in autumn and sprouts in the following spring. To make sowing even, an appropriate amount of fine sand or humus can be mixed into the seeds, and drilling is used.

2. Spring sowing: For spring sowing of gentian, sand storage treatment should be carried out first. That is, after the seeds are harvested, mix them with fine sand at 1:3 and bury them outdoors. After the low-temperature influence of winter, take them out and sow, using drilling.

Planting methods for gentian

1. Site selection and land preparation: Gentian should preferably be planted in relatively moist, flat, sunny sandy soil rich in humus. Areas with high, dry terrain, direct sunlight, overly sticky soil or poor, infertile soil are not suitable for cultivation.

2. Timely weeding: When planting gentian, weeding should not be limited by the number of times. Follow the principle of removing early, removing small, and removing as soon as weeds appear. Do not wait until the weeds grow up and form a weed infestation before pulling them, as this both wastes labor and damages the seedlings.

3. Reasonable loosening of the soil: After gentian is transplanted and revived, the surface crust of the bed caused by watering should be removed promptly by hand or with a rake. Do not loosen the soil too deeply, so as not to injure the seedlings or pull them out. Generally, combining weeding with soil loosening 2 to 3 times is sufficient.

4. Timely topdressing: After gentian is transplanted and revived, foliar topdressing is carried out. Foliar topdressing can be done twice, from after leaf expansion to the budding stage and from flowering to fruiting, using foliar fertilizers such as monopotassium phosphate, Yemianbao and Fengchansu.

5. Thinning flowers and removing buds: When planting gentian, in order to reduce nutrient consumption, promote root material accumulation, accelerate rhizome growth and improve cultivation benefits, all flower buds should be removed after budding for fields not used for seed production.

Pest and disease control for gentian

1. Leaf spot disease

[Damage] It harms leaves and, in severe cases, causes the entire leaf to wither and die.

[Control] Spray once every 10 days after early summer with a 1000-fold solution of 50% Tuijunling, and remove dead branches and fallen leaves before winter to prevent the spread of the pathogen.

2. Underground pests

[Damage] White grubs, mole crickets, wireworms and others harm the roots.

[Control] When preparing the land, making beds or forming ridges, apply 1000-fold zinc phoxim poisonous soil, or spray and disinfect with a 1000-fold zinc phoxim solution.

3. Brown spot disease

[Damage] On severely infected leaves, the lesions merge into patches, causing the leaves to turn brown and yellow and wither until the plant dies.

[Control] In the early stage of the disease, use a 300 to 600-fold solution of 25% carbendazim wettable powder, or a 1000-fold solution of 50% thiophanate-methyl.
