Blackberry lily (Belamcanda chinensis) is a perennial herbaceous plant whose rhizome can be used as medicine. It has the effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, reducing swelling and relieving pain, and relieving cough and reducing phlegm, and is mainly used to treat symptoms such as tonsillitis and low back pain. It is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions and is cultivated in every province of our country. Below, let us take a look at its planting techniques together.

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Choose a place with a warm climate and sufficient sunlight for planting. Blackberry lily has no strict requirements for soil and can also be planted on dry hillside land. It is best planted in sandy loam soil with higher terrain, loose and fertile soil, and good drainage. During land preparation, apply sufficient base fertilizer, applying 2000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer per mu, spread it evenly on the ground, and mix it evenly with the soil during plowing. Then rake it fine and level it. Make flat beds 90 cm wide, irrigate within the beds, and plant once the surface soil becomes loose.

2. Propagation

Blackberry lily has two propagation methods: seed propagation and division propagation. The sowing time is in November. Before sowing, subject the seeds to variable temperature treatment to increase the germination rate. When sowing, mix the seeds with fine sand and scatter them into shallow furrows, generally sowing 1-2 kg per mu. After sowing, cover with a layer of fine soil to level it, and press lightly. The division propagation method can be carried out at the same time as harvesting. Select rhizomes that are disease-free, undamaged, and bright yellow in color, cut them apart according to the branches, with each rhizome carrying 1-2 root buds, place them in a cool place to dry, and after the wounds heal, dig holes for planting, with a plant-to-row spacing of 20×9 cm between holes. The holes are 5-6 cm deep, with one plant per hole, with the bud head facing upward, and seedlings will emerge after the beginning of spring.

3. Fertilizer, water and soil management

Before blackberry lily emerges in spring, keep the soil moist so that it emerges quickly. After the seedlings emerge, loosen the soil and weed in time to avoid the soil being too hard or too many weeds affecting seedling emergence. The same applies to seedlings emerging in winter, and attention should also be paid to temperature to avoid frost damage caused by low temperatures. For those propagated by division, water once with freezing water, and after emergence also loosen the soil and weed, and earth up according to actual production conditions to prevent lodging. During the rainy season, take good drainage and waterlogging prevention measures to avoid root waterlogging and root rot, which can cause reduced yield. To make blackberry lily grow thick and strong and improve yield and quality, topdressing is essential. Generally, increase fertilizer strength before growth, and control fertilizer and water in the later growth stage. In the early stage, manure water fertilizer is generally used, while in the later stage, increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to improve yield.

4. Removing flower stems and topping

Blackberry lily generally has its flower stems removed and blooms in July-August, and this is also the time when its nutrient consumption is greatest. Therefore, in addition to seed fields, be sure to remove the flower stems and top in time to reduce nutrient consumption, so that nutrients are concentrated for rhizome growth and yield is increased. According to practical production, fields after removing flower stems and topping can increase yield by 10%. In addition, strengthen ventilation and light transmission between plants. Otherwise, poor ventilation and light transmission will cause the leaves on the lower half of the plants to wither and fall off. Remove the withered parts in time to concentrate nutrients, which can not only avoid nutrient consumption but also prevent and control pests and diseases.
