Coltsfoot, also known as winter flower and butterbur, is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicinal herb. It has a long history of medicinal use and is a common drug for moistening the lungs and directing qi downward, relieving cough and resolving phlegm. Coltsfoot flower is distributed in most areas of our country. Due to the depletion of wild resources, production is declining day by day, so artificial cultivation has risen. Let's take a look at its planting techniques below.

1. Site selection and land preparation

For planting coltsfoot, generally choose shady slopes or low sunny slopes in mountainous areas. The planting soil is preferably loose, fertile sandy loam with good drainage, and the plot is required to have convenient drainage and irrigation. Avoid continuous cropping on the same land. Before the winter freeze or when the soil thaws in spring, deep plow, harrow fine, and level the plot, and apply sufficient base fertilizer during plowing, applying 1000-1500 kg of decomposed compost per mu. According to the terrain, make flat beds or raised beds, and make drainage ditches.

2. Sowing

When the coltsfoot seeds mature, pick the fruits together with the seeds, wrap them in paper towels or a towel, place them in the sun to dry, and rub off the pappus or use them as seeds. Evenly scatter the seeds on the bed surface, then cover with a thin layer of soil. After covering with soil, cover with plastic film or rice straw to keep warm and moist. Seedlings begin to emerge in about a week, and they can be planted out after the soil thaws in the following spring.

3. Field management

After the seedlings emerge, remove the plastic film and rice straw. Check frequently, replant and thin seedlings in time, and increase ventilation and light transmission between seedlings. Thinning is generally carried out in April-May. When thinning, remove diseased and weak seedlings, keep the large ones and remove the small ones, and cultivate strong seedlings. After the seedlings grow uniformly, loosen the soil and weed together with thinning. This can prevent weeds from affecting seedling growth and also speed up root development. During the last loosening and weeding, earth up the soil to prevent the flower buds from being exposed above the ground, which would affect quality.

4. Fertilizer and water management

Topdressing can be carried out together with intertillage and weeding, but fertilizing first and then intertilling is required. Each topdressing can apply 1000 kg of compost combined with plant ash per mu. To promote plant growth, generally no topdressing is applied in the early stage. Topdressing is carried out 1-2 times in autumn at the flower bud stage, each time applying 15 kg of nitrogen fertilizer and 8 kg of phosphorus fertilizer. In spring, the plants need a certain amount of water to grow, so if spring is too dry, water in time, but also avoid water accumulation caused by the rainy season, and take good drainage and waterlogging prevention measures.
