What are the latest growing conditions for Solomon's seal (Polygonatum odoratum)? Understand it all in one article
Solomon's seal (Polygonatum odoratum) is a perennial herb of the Liliaceae family. Its rhizome can be used medicinally, with the effects of nourishing yin and moistening the lungs, benefiting the stomach and promoting fluid production, and it can lower blood sugar, blood lipids and blood pressure. It is one of the medicinal materials commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. Its wild resources are gradually decreasing, so artificial cultivation has arisen, but it has certain requirements for the growing environment. Let's take a look at the detailed introduction below.
1. Growing environment
Wild Solomon's seal generally grows in zones at an altitude of 300-1500 m, while if it is artificially cultivated, it must be planted in areas above 900 m altitude, so as to avoid the climate affecting its growth. In addition, there should be no factories near the planting site, because Solomon's seal is relatively sensitive to smoke. If there is a large-scale facility nearby, it will affect its growth.
2. Soil
Solomon's seal likes sandy soil and requires fertile, loose soil with good drainage, but sandy soil generally has average fertility. If it is yellow clay, it tends to harden when dry, making digging more difficult, but its water and fertilizer retention is strong. When sufficient base fertilizer is applied, high-quality Solomon's seal can be grown, but it is not suitable for planting. Plots that have long used herbicides cannot be planted; soil that is too heavy and sticky is not suitable for planting; soil that is too loose and has no granular structure gives lower yields; gravelly soil is not suitable for planting.
3. Temperature
Solomon's seal also has relatively high temperature requirements. It is drought-tolerant, but its seeds need a temperature of around 25 degrees to break dormancy and begin to germinate. When emerging, it needs a temperature of 9-12 degrees; when budding and flowering, it should be kept at 18-22 degrees; when the underground rhizome expands, it needs a temperature of 19-25 degrees. In autumn, when the temperature is below 20 degrees, the fruit gradually matures and the aboveground parts grow slowly.
4. Water
Water is extremely important for the growth of Solomon's seal. Generally, when the monthly average precipitation is 200 mm, it is the period when its underground rhizome grows fastest, while when the precipitation is below 20 mm, growth will slow or stop. When watering during planting, it is not suitable to use sulfur water, mineral slag filtered water or livestock farm discharge water, as they will affect plant growth and, in severe cases, cause plant death.
