We are no strangers to honeysuckle. It is a Chinese medicinal herb often used in our daily lives, mainly for brewing tea, clearing heat and reducing internal fire, and preventing colds. It has strong adaptability to the environment, and ordinary soil is enough to grow it. At present, the scale of honeysuckle cultivation in our country is also constantly expanding, and in the process of growing honeysuckle, we need to prune their branches and leaves, so how should honeysuckle be pruned? Let us take a look together below.

1. Pruning Time

The branch and leaf pruning of honeysuckle is somewhat different from the pruning of other crops. It can be pruned in all four seasons of the year. In spring, it is generally after the first batch of honeysuckle is harvested; summer pruning is generally at the end of July, that is, after the second batch of honeysuckle is harvested. Autumn pruning is in early August, after the third flower harvest, and the last time is after the final honeysuckle harvest, that is, before the branches and leaves sprout in spring.

2. Pruning Young Plants

For honeysuckle at the seedling stage, we generally focus on shaping, so we need to cultivate the primary, secondary, and tertiary main branches well. We can shape the young plants according to the tree form we like, but the premise is to lay the foundation for later high yield. During the first pruning, we mainly need to keep one main branch, and then the crown is umbrella-shaped. Then with each subsequent pruning, gradually keep more main branches than the others; for the umbrella shape, select about ten to thirteen secondary branches, and gradually cultivate tertiary branches.

3. Pruning Mature Plants

Pruning adult honeysuckle is more cumbersome. It needs to take into account various factors such as the plant's growth condition, flowering period, and permeability. At this time, the plants basically already have a tree form, so pruning the branches and leaves of honeysuckle is mainly to achieve high yield and high quality. The principle of pruning is to remove the weak and keep the strong, removing miscellaneous branches, crossing branches, drooping branches, dead branches, weak branches, diseased branches, and dense branches, so that the yield and quality of honeysuckle will be greatly improved. At the same time, it can also extend the service life of the plant.

4. Pruning Old Plants

The service life of honeysuckle is relatively long, and it generally does not enter the aging stage until after twenty years. At this time, in order to maintain the yield of honeysuckle and extend the service time of the honeysuckle tree, we generally prune off all the old branches on the upper part of the honeysuckle that has already aged, which can promote the growth of new branches and thus maintain the original yield to a certain extent.

5. Pruning by Variety

At present, there are many varieties of artificially cultivated honeysuckle on the market, and honeysuckle plants of different varieties also have slight differences in pruning. Therefore, when pruning honeysuckle plants of different varieties, we need to prune according to the original plant-age pruning principles, and also prune according to the pruning methods for plants of different varieties. But the ultimate goal is to enhance the permeability of the plants and improve the yield and quality of honeysuckle.

The above is the pruning methods for honeysuckle compiled by the editor. In general, pruning is basically carried out according to these two principles and methods. If you have other better suggestions or better methods, you are welcome to recommend them to us.
