How to Propagate Arundo donax var. versicolor? A Detailed Guide to Common Propagation Methods
I. Rhizome Division Propagation:
1. The first thing we need to do is dig out the underground stem tubers of the plant, then rinse the silt off the rhizomes with clean water, and then use a knife to cut the tubers into chunks, with roughly 3 to 4 buds per chunk.
2. Prepare the soil for cultivating the sprouts. This plant likes fertile, slightly acidic, loose sandy soil with good drainage. We had best prepare this kind of growing medium for it.
3. This plant is extremely afraid of drought, and it can grow at the water's edge, not only unafraid of waterlogging but actually very fond of moist environments, so we should water the soil thoroughly, preferably to the point where water spreads above the soil surface.
4. Then bury the tubers, with the spacing between each tuber reaching 40 cm, because this plant can grow very tall.
II. Cuttage Propagation:
1. If this method is used, it can generally be done in late August or early September. After cutting off the branches with scissors or a knife, insert them into water immediately. Because this method cannot be separated from water, you must cut and insert at once.
2. Generally, a water level of 3 to 5 cm on the cutting bed is enough, and after about 20 days, it will grow roots.
3. If planting in the open ground, you can choose to dig a hole for planting at the edge of a pond, beside ornamental rocks, or in some low-lying places prone to water accumulation; if planting in a pot, you can choose a container with an inner diameter of about 50 to 60 cm, preferably one that does not leak water. After planting, water frequently, and be sure to keep the soil moist and maintain a shallow water level.
III. Precautions
1. After it grows out, raise the water temperature appropriately at the right time, because it likes warmth and fears cold.
2. Remove surrounding weeds promptly so the plant can absorb nutrients.
3. If the light is too intense, provide appropriate shade.
