How can a golden-edged snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata 'Laurentii') regain its golden edges?

This is a plant in the Asparagaceae family. Perhaps you have heard of the "snake plant," but never heard of this particular plant, right? Actually, it is quite simple: it gets its name because the edges of its leaves are golden yellow. Take a look at its picture, and you will see it clearly. It originated in tropical regions, and later spread to subtropical areas as well. Without a doubt, the golden yellow along its leaf edges is the most beloved feature. However, if it disappears, it is certainly very troubling. So, what should be done?

1. Reasons the golden edge disappears

The most commonly used propagation method for this plant is cuttings. However, this method also has a drawback: the seedlings cultivated through it often lose the golden yellow edges on their leaves. This is because its golden edge is a very special variegation, and it cannot be passed on to its offspring unconditionally. However, with special methods, we can also preserve it.

2. How to keep the golden edge from disappearing

(1) First, take the selected mature plant out of its pot, remove the soil clinging to it, then cut off the small outer leaves, and snap off two or three large leaves; these large leaves should be about thirteen to fifteen cm long.

(2) Then, treat the wounds with charcoal, stove ash, or plant ash to prevent infection. After that, replant the original plant back into the pot as it was; for now, it is no longer needed.

(3) Next comes handling the long leaves we removed. The specific method is: cut off the upper part of the leaf, then insert it into a flower pot with the leaf sheath facing downward. Keep the surrounding temperature at around 20°C. In this way, one to four new shoots will soon grow, and they will all have the original golden edges.
