Yanhusuo, which is what we commonly call Yuanhu, is a perennial plant in the poppy family. Its main medicinal part is its tuber, which is rich in alkaloids and is often used for pain relief, promoting blood circulation and dispersing blood stasis, and treating bruises and injuries. In our country it is mainly distributed in Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei and Zhejiang, and it is also grown in small amounts in many other areas, such as Shaanxi and Gansu. So how should Yanhusuo be planted? Let us take a look at its planting methods below.

1. Land preparation

The growing environment for Yanhusuo is generally relatively warm and humid. The planting site should be sandy soil with good drainage, strong soil permeability and rich humus content. Land preparation is generally done in autumn, deep plowing the soil at least three times and applying sufficient farmyard manure or compost. Break the soil clods into fine pieces, level the ground, and open furrows to make beds. The bed width is about 1.3 m, the bed height is about 30 cm, and the furrow width is about 30 cm and the depth about 20 cm.

2. Sowing

The best planting time for Yanhusuo is from the end of September to the beginning of October each year. Sowing is usually done by drilling, then opening shallow furrows with a row spacing of about 10 cm and a furrow depth of about 5 cm, and then placing the seed tubers of Yanhusuo at a spacing of 6 to 7 cm. After placing them, scatter fertilizer, then cover with a layer of fine soil to bury the seeds. About 900 kg of seed tubers are generally needed per mu.

3. Management

Weeding for Yanhusuo is somewhat different from weeding for other medicinal herbs. It cannot use intertillage weeding and can only be weeded by hand. After weeds grow, they must be pulled at any time to avoid nutrient loss. In February, carry out the first fertilization, mainly with manure and urine water or ammonium bicarbonate. When fertilizing, we need to dilute the fertilizer concentration to avoid damaging the growth of Yanhusuo. Next is in April, which is the post-flowering fertilizer for Yanhusuo. In addition to manure and urine water, it also needs to be applied together with chemical fertilizers such as potassium fertilizer and phosphorus fertilizer. During the growing period of Yanhusuo, water management is very important, so we must ensure soil moisture, water reasonably, and drain promptly.

4. Pest and disease control

The most common pests and diseases of Yanhusuo include downy mildew, sclerotinia disease, rust disease and cutworms. Downy mildew generally occurs during the growing period of Yanhusuo, that is, around April. We can use Bordeaux mixture for control, or use chlorothalonil wettable powder for control. Sclerotinia disease generally begins to appear gradually from March, and April is the peak period of the disease. Thiophanate-methyl wettable powder or carbendazim wettable powder can be used for control. Rust disease generally occurs mostly in the middle growth stage of carbendazim wettable powder and mainly harms the stems and leaves of Yanhusuo. Disodium edetate can be used for control. For underground pests such as cutworms, we can apply benzene hexachloride powder during land preparation for prevention.

The above are the planting methods for Yanhusuo. In the process of planting Yanhusuo, there are also many places we need to pay attention to, which can to a certain extent improve the yield and quality of Yanhusuo. That is all for today's sharing.
