A Complete Analysis of the Latest Cultivation Methods for Hemp Seed
Hemp seed is hempseed, which is actually the seed of the hemp plant in the Cannabaceae family. It has high medicinal value and can be used to lubricate the intestines and relieve constipation, expel parasites, treat postpartum blood retention, blood deficiency with depleted fluids, vomiting and hiccups, and other symptoms. It can be used to make soup or porridge, or brewed as tea, and can also be used as medicine, making it widely applicable. So how do you cultivate hemp seed? Today let us learn about its cultivation methods together.
1. Site Selection and Land Preparation
Hemp seed has the characteristics of being light-loving, tolerant of atmospheric drought but not soil drought, and not tolerant of waterlogging. Therefore, its requirements for soil selection at the planting site are relatively high. Generally, land that stores water well, retains fertilizer well, has loose soil texture, contains a large amount of organic matter in the soil, has a relatively low groundwater level, and is convenient for drainage and irrigation is suitable. At the same time, continuous cropping land cannot be used. Deep plowing is carried out in autumn, then irrigation is carried out in winter or spring, while sufficient base fertilizer is spread on at the same time. Generally, at least about 6,000 kg per mu is needed. After spreading the base fertilizer, plow the land again, then rake the ground level, make the beds, and prepare for sowing.
2. Cultivation Techniques
The sowing time is related to the climate of the planting area. Generally, in the Heilongjiang region, sowing is from mid-April to the end of May each year, while in Liaoning, sowing is carried out in early April each year, but in the Shandong region, it can be sown in two seasons: from March to April in spring and in June in summer. There are three sowing methods: broadcast sowing, row sowing, and dibbling. The best sowing method is row sowing, generally with a row spacing of about 12 to 13 cm and a plant spacing of about 7 to 8 cm, sowing evenly, then covering with a thin layer of soil to bury the seeds, and then waiting for seedlings to emerge.
3. Field Management
Field management is the key to hemp seed cultivation. Generally, about half a month after seedlings emerge, we need to begin thinning and replanting seedlings. Remove seedlings that are growing too densely or are weak, and then when the seedlings have grown to about 18 cm, transplanting is needed. During the processes of thinning, replanting, and transplanting, this should be continuously combined with intertillage and weeding to promote the healthy growth of hemp seed. Watering hemp seed generally should wait until about a month and a half after seedlings emerge, and should be carried out together with ammonium sulfate. When hemp seed is about to flower, we need to apply an additional 200 jin each of ammonium sulfate and calcium phosphate. For the later growth of hemp seed, we need to proceed scientifically according to its water and fertilizer requirements.
4. Pest and Disease Control
Hemp seed has many pests and diseases, such as white star disease, damping-off, downy mildew, root-knot nematode disease, white root rot, southern blight, hemp flea beetle, hemp longhorn beetle, and so on. Among them, the most important disease is white star disease, which mainly harms the leaf surface of hemp seed. First, we need to strengthen field management, then in the early stage of the disease, remove the affected leaves, and then spray Bordeaux mixture for control. As for the hemp flea beetle and hemp longhorn beetle, carbaryl wettable powder and dichlorvos emulsion can be used respectively for poisoning and killing.
