Isodon serra is a perennial herbaceous plant. It is not a major bulk Chinese medicinal herb, but rather a folk herbal medicine, also known as "Tuhuanglian" (wild coptis). It is generally used to treat acute icteric hepatitis, acute cholecystitis, dysentery, enteritis, and so on, and it also has the effect of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis.

So how do you grow Isodon serra? Today let us take a look at its cultivation methods.

1. Soil and Fertilizer Preparation

Wild Isodon serra generally grows on hillsides, in fields, beside paths, along ditch edges, by small streams, and so on. It is a plant that likes light and moisture but fears waterlogging, so the planting site is generally chosen as sandy loam that is convenient for drainage and irrigation, relatively fertile, and not prone to hardening. Heavy clay or overly sandy soil is not suitable for planting. Prepare the soil finely, apply a heavy base fertilizer, and dig good drainage ditches for drainage and water diversion.

2. Propagation Methods

There are three ways to propagate Isodon serra: seed propagation, cutting propagation, and division propagation. Seed propagation is generally carried out in spring when there is more rainfall or in autumn when the fruit is ripe, mainly by drilling or dibbling. Before sowing, the seeds need to be mixed with fine river sand; after sowing, they need to be watered and covered with rice straw to keep them warm and moist. For cutting propagation, select high-quality branches, cut them into small sections about 12 to 13 cm long, and soak them in rooting powder to increase the survival rate of the branches. Division propagation uses the old roots from the previous crop to grow new shoots, which are then used for transplanting.

3. Reasonable Close Planting

Since Isodon serra will keep propagating during its subsequent growth, the planting density becomes very important. For greater benefits, we need to ensure the yield of Isodon serra and also ensure its quality. We generally plant at a row spacing of 20 to 25 cm and a plant spacing of 15 to 20 cm.

4. Field Management

After Isodon serra survives transplanting, which is about ten days or so, it will grow new roots. During this period we need to fertilize multiple times, mainly by applying urea or manure and urine water. After half a month, apply manure and urine water once more, and during the later growth process, generally fertilize once every half a month. After transplanting, water twice a day and cover with plastic film to keep it warm and moist. After rain, drain water promptly to avoid soil hardening caused by waterlogging. Finally, carry out intertillage and weeding three or four times a year to maintain soil looseness and reduce nutrient consumption.

5. Pest and Disease Control

Isodon serra was originally a wild weed, so its vitality and resistance are very strong. Throughout the entire growth process of Isodon serra, there are rarely pests and diseases, but sometimes powdery mildew and aphids appear. For powdery mildew, we can spray with carbendazim or triadimefon powder, generally once every week or so, and two to three times is enough for it to heal. For aphids, we can use "Yakexing" to spray and kill them; of course, the effect of trichlorfon crystals is also very effective.

Isodon serra is generally used as a whole plant for medicine. When growing it, we should mainly use as few chemicals as possible to avoid toxin residues remaining in the Isodon serra plant. The above is what the editor wants to share with everyone today, and I hope it can be helpful to everyone.
