Chinese Desmodium is a type of Lysimachia christinae (moneywort), and it can also be called moneywort or copper coin grass. It has the effects of clearing heat, removing dampness, and promoting urination. It is mainly grown in Guangdong, Guangxi and other places in China, which is also the reason it is called Chinese Desmodium. So how do you grow Chinese Desmodium? Today let us learn about its cultivation methods together.

1. Site selection and land preparation

Wild Chinese Desmodium generally grows in wasteland, sloping fields, grassland and other places, and it is characterized by a preference for warmth and moisture. The temperature generally suitable for its growth is around 15 to 30 degrees, and it grows fastest in an environment of 23 to 25 degrees. From this we can choose its planting site; generally hillsides, stream banks, or relatively fertile sloping fields and open fields are all acceptable. Plow the land, remove weeds and debris from the field, open furrows and make beds, apply base fertilizer and mix it evenly, then wait to plant.

2. Sowing and seedling raising

Chinese Desmodium is generally propagated by seed. Sow during the period from the end of March to the beginning of April each spring, and the best planting time is around Qingming Festival. The seeds of Chinese Desmodium are relatively small, with a waxy layer covering the surface. If planted directly, they absorb water poorly and are not easy to sprout. So we need to use fine sand to rub off this waxy layer on the surface, and then sow. Finally, scatter the seeds evenly on the seedbed, cover the seeds with soil, water the soil, and cover with a layer of plastic film to keep warm and retain moisture.

3. Transplanting seedlings

When the seedlings of Chinese Desmodium grow to 6 to 10 cm, they can be transplanted and planted. At this time, the most important thing to pay attention to during planting is the planning of density; generally, plant at a spacing of 25 to 30 cm between rows and 20 to 25 cm between plants. The next thing to note is that when pulling out the seedlings, we need to pull them out together with the base soil, which can improve the survival rate of the planted seedlings.

4. Field management

About 5 to 7 days after planting, we need to spray a herbicide once, which can reduce the workload of weeding. About 10 days after planting Chinese Desmodium, a topdressing of fertilizer is needed, and manure and urine water can be used for irrigation. When the seedlings grow to about 25 cm, another topdressing of manure and urine water is also needed. After that, fertilizing once every month or so is generally sufficient. At the same time, during the growth of Chinese Desmodium, carry out intertillage and soil loosening from time to time, and weed promptly when weeds grow. Also, water and drain scientifically according to the moisture level of the soil and the water requirements of Chinese Desmodium.

5. Pest and disease control

The main pests and diseases of Chinese Desmodium are root rot, mold disease, armyworms and caterpillars. Root rot generally occurs during the seedling growth period. We can choose varieties with stronger resistance, and next, pull out the diseased plants and irrigate with lime water for disinfection. Mold disease mainly occurs during the growth period of Chinese Desmodium and harms the growth of its stems and leaves; thiophanate-methyl can be used for control. As for armyworms and caterpillars, we can use trichlorfon for spraying and killing, and caterpillars can also be trapped and killed using black light lamps.
