How to Propagate Jiaogulan? A Full Analysis of the Latest Methods
Jiaogulan is a medicinal herb, and many people also make it into Jiaogulan Dragon Whisker tea, which is also very popular on the market. Jiaogulan has a large planting area in southern China, and jiaogulan is also very easy to grow, with relatively high survival rates and yields. However, some friends now want to grow jiaogulan but do not know how to propagate it, so today the editor brings you jiaogulan propagation. Let's take a look below!
1. Seed Propagation
Seed propagation is the most common propagation method for jiaogulan. Under normal conditions, jiaogulan fruit begins to mature in October-November. After maturity, harvest the seeds, remove the fruit skin, pick out the shriveled seeds, then air-dry them and store them in a cool, ventilated place to prevent moisture from causing the seeds to rot. They can be sown around Qingming Festival the following year. Before sowing, do a good job of soaking, disinfecting and sprouting the seeds. Control the sowing rate well to prevent overcrowding during later growth. After sowing, cover with fine soil and set up a greenhouse to prevent direct sunlight. Before germination, observe weather changes and water at least once a day to keep the seedling bed soil moist. When about 80% of the seedlings have emerged, uncover the covering. Then spray carbendazim and other agents to prevent and control diseases. When the seedlings grow to about 10 cm, they can be transplanted and planted out at the appropriate time.
2. Cutting Propagation
Cutting propagation is the main propagation method used by experienced growers to expand the planting area. First, select thick, disease-free vines or rhizomes. Then cut them into small sections of 4-5 nodes, control the cutting density, and place them into planting holes for cuttings. After successful cutting, just as with seed propagation, a shed must be set up immediately, because jiaogulan is very afraid of direct sunlight, so shade work must be done well. Then water regularly to ensure sufficient soil moisture and promote rooting of the cuttings. When most of the branches have taken root after 1-2 months and grown to about 15 cm, they can be transplanted into the field for planting out.
3. Rhizome Propagation
Rhizome propagation is also the last propagation method for jiaogulan, and rhizome propagation has certain timing requirements. It is usually carried out around the Beginning of Spring or around mid-September. First, dig out the rhizomes of the harvested plants, and just as with cutting propagation, cut them into small sections of about 4-6 cm. Then control the planting density at about 35cm*45cm and dig the planting holes. Place 1-2 small sections into each planting hole and cover with 2-3 cm of fine soil. After successful planting, water thoroughly to increase soil water content and promote rooting and seedling emergence.
The above three are the main propagation methods for jiaogulan. Jiaogulan propagation is still mainly based on seed propagation, because the germination rate of seed propagation is extremely high. As long as the seeds are ensured to be fresh enough, the germination rate can reach as high as 95%. However, after germination, everyone still needs to do a good job of field management, so as to ensure the survival rate of the seedlings and increase yield. That is all for today's introduction.
