Schisandra chinensis, also known as Xuanji, Wumeizi and Shanhua, gets its name because the different parts of its fruit have varying flavors. It is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb with high medicinal value and health-strengthening effects. It is now planted all over the country, and pests and diseases often harm its growth during cultivation, affecting yield and income and giving growers a major headache. Let us take a look below at the control methods for its pests and diseases.

1. Yellow leaf disease

Yellow leaf disease mainly harms the plant's leaves, and especially the new leaves. Often, shortly after new leaves emerge, they gradually turn yellow until, after the vines extend, the tips die, causing the leaves to lose normal photosynthesis and greatly affecting the growth of Schisandra chinensis.

Control method: When yellow leaf disease occurs, Huangyeling can be diluted 250 times with water and sprayed, once every ten days to half a month, with excellent results. It can also be used together with thiophanate-methyl and mancozeb.

2. Leaf blight

Leaf blight is a very common pathogen in Schisandra chinensis production. It is a fungal disease that generally breaks out from May to July. When the disease occurs, the leaf tips or edges begin to wither and gradually spread to the entire leaf surface, ultimately causing the whole leaf to wither and fall off. It can also affect the fruit and cause early fruit drop.

Control method: A biological pesticide, validamycin aqueous solution, can be diluted with water and sprayed once every week. Thiophanate-methyl and mancozeb can also be sprayed for control.

3. Powdery mildew

Powdery mildew is also a common disease of Schisandra chinensis. It generally occurs in June and can also break out together with black spot disease. When it occurs, irregular lesions appear on the leaves, and in the later stages of the disease, small white granular substances appear on the lesions.

Control method: Lime sulfur mixture, triadimefon or thiophanate-methyl can be sprayed for control. If the disease is severe, triadimefon can be mixed with mancozeb for combined control, with the concentration adjusted according to plant size and disease severity.

4. Leaf roller

Leaf rollers damage plants as larvae, mainly harming leaves and also fruits. Three days after hatching, they gnaw on leaves and spin silk to roll the leaves, causing the plant's leaf photosynthesis to weaken and preventing effective nutrient synthesis, which leads to poor plant growth. In severe cases, it can also cause early fruit drop and affect yield.

Control method: For leaf rollers before they reach three days of age, trichlorfon can be sprayed to kill them. For three-day-old leaf rollers, the systemic insecticide dimethoate oil should be sprayed for control.
