Detailed Introduction to the Latest Cultivation Conditions for Coptis chinensis
Coptis chinensis is one of the precious medicinal herbs, and we are fairly familiar with its name. In recent years, Coptis chinensis has developed well, with good cultivation profits. However, Coptis chinensis is a high-altitude shade-loving plant with high requirements for the growing environment, so what conditions are needed to grow Coptis chinensis? Let's take a look together.
1. Altitude Requirements
Coptis chinensis is mostly distributed in high mountains at an altitude of about 1200-1800 m, among which 1400-1700 m is suitable for cultivation. In environments at an altitude of about 1800 m, the climate is cold and the growth period of Coptis chinensis is relatively short. Although growth is slow and seeds are fewer, the rhizome is firm and the quality is relatively good. In mountain environments below 1000 m in altitude, the temperature is relatively high. Although Coptis chinensis grows faster and often has lush stems and leaves, the rhizome is not substantial, the quality is poor, and it is easily infected by pests and diseases.
2. Temperature Requirements
Coptis chinensis has strong cold resistance and prefers a high, cold and cool climate. It is not tolerant of high temperatures and hot climates, and its leaves can remain evergreen in frost and snow conditions. It can withstand low temperatures of minus 10 degrees; at minus 6 degrees the leaves can remain evergreen; at minus 5 degrees the plant is in a dormant state; above 50 degrees the plant begins to sprout new leaves; at 10 degrees new leaves grow extremely fast; and when the temperature is higher than 25 degrees, new leaves grow slowly.
3. Light Requirements
Coptis chinensis is a shade-loving plant and avoids direct strong light. It prefers weak light and scattered light environments, so shading treatment should be done during cultivation, and understory cultivation can also be chosen. The light requirement of Coptis chinensis increases with the growing years, and generally about 60% shade is needed. In the early growth stage, the greater the shade, the more favorable it is for seedling growth. When the plant enters the stage of underground tuber expansion, the covering should then be removed so that the growth of aboveground stems and leaves is restricted and nutrients are transferred to the rhizome.
4. Soil Requirements
Coptis chinensis is suitable for growing in sandy loam soil with deep soil layers, loose and fertile texture, and rich in humus. It is mostly cultivated in evergreen broad-leaved forests and mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests. The soils in these areas are mostly humus rich in organic matter, rich in potassium and nitrogen elements, with relatively high water content, and are all slightly acidic soils with a pH value between 5.5-6.5.
