Panax notoginseng is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Its dried rhizome can be used as medicine; it has the effects of invigorating blood and dissolving stasis, reducing swelling and stopping pain, and is mainly used to treat coughing blood, vomiting blood, blood in the stool, bleeding from trauma, and swelling and pain from falls and bruises. Panax notoginseng is propagated by sowing; its seeds easily lose viability after drying, so they should be sown as soon as they are harvested. Let's take a look at the Panax notoginseng seedling-raising technique below.

1. Site selection and land preparation

Choose a gentle slope with a lower position and good drainage as the seedling-raising site; the previous crop should preferably be corn, peanuts, soybeans, or similar crops, while Solanaceae crops are not allowed. After choosing the seedling-raising site, leave it idle for 3-6 months, repeatedly covering it to promote soil weathering. If conditions permit, you can also spread plant ash or lime powder for disinfection. During the final plowing, apply 4000-5000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure per mu as a base fertilizer. After raking fine and leveling, make beds; the width and height of the beds should depend on the terrain.

⟦NL>2. Seed treatment

Each year when the fruit matures, pick the fruit produced by plants that have grown for 3-4 years, remove the peel, wash clean, dry the surface moisture in the air, then soak the seeds in a low-concentration solution of zineb or thiophanate-methyl for 8-10 minutes for disinfection. Panax notoginseng seeds have weak viability and will lose viability after drying, so they are not suitable for storage; therefore, sow them as soon as they are harvested.

3. Sowing

Sowing uses the spot-seeding method. On the bed surface, open holes at a spacing of 5×6cm, sow 3-4 seeds per hole, then cover with a thin layer of soil. After sowing, evenly scatter a layer of compound fertilizer on the soil, then cover with a layer of weeds, which can prevent weed growth. Use 70000-100000 seeds per mu, about 10-12 kg. After sowing, water thoroughly once, then cover with plastic film, which can clearly conserve water, save fertilizer, and increase yield.

4. Seedling-stage management

After the seedlings emerge, promptly remove the plastic film and covering grass. During dry weather, water and irrigate frequently to keep the soil moist and maintain the moisture needed by the seedlings. After rain, drain promptly to prevent waterlogging, so as to avoid root rot in the seedlings. During the seedling stage, weed promptly. In addition to water management, timely topdressing to promote seedling growth is also necessary. Topdressing during the seedling stage is mainly phosphorus fertilizer, generally 3 times: the first when the seedlings are full, the second in May, and the third in July.
