Sichuan pepper is widely used in dishes in many parts of our country and is a very popular seasoning. Its market demand is relatively large, and as market demand grows, more and more people are growing it. However, a problem many experienced growers now face is how to propagate Sichuan pepper trees. So how should Sichuan pepper trees be propagated? Below, the editor brings you the propagation methods for Sichuan pepper. Let's take a look together!

1. Seed propagation

At present, seed propagation is the main method for propagating Sichuan pepper, but because Sichuan pepper seeds are relatively hard, high in oil content and poor in permeability, the germination rate is relatively low if they are not treated. Therefore, before sowing, the seeds must be degreased and deoiled to increase the germination rate. Then, when sowing, select out shriveled seeds, seeds damaged by pests or disease, and damaged seeds, and do a good job of pregermination and disinfection. Sow in spring or autumn; autumn is relatively more suitable, as both the emergence rate and the uniform emergence rate are relatively high. For the specific steps, please see previous articles!

2. Division propagation

Division propagation is mainly carried out in spring, when the Sichuan pepper tree has not yet fully sprouted. Select suckering seedlings produced within two years and perform girdling at their base. Then bury them in the soil to promote sprouting and rooting at the girdled wound. After roots have successfully grown, after about one growth cycle, separate the suckering seedlings, which can be managed as individual plants. Alternatively, cut away more than half of the base of the suckering seedling, then mound soil around it to promote growth. After separating the suckering seedlings, observe their growth. If they are growing well, they can be transplanted appropriately. Otherwise, they need to remain in the seedbed until more new roots have grown before transplanting.

3. Air layering for seedling raising

Air layering for seedling raising is mainly done each spring. When temperatures gradually rise at the beginning of spring, select branches in the Sichuan pepper orchard that are robust, high-yielding and free of pests and disease as the layering branches. Cut the branch transversely to its xylem, then pull it upward by 20 cm. Insert it into a container; the bottom of the container needs ventilation, and the inside should be filled with soil. After insertion, water thoroughly to ensure the branch has enough water and nutrients. Cover the top of the container with a water-permeable material to ensure nourishment from rainwater. Then, in the second year, after the branch has successfully rooted, transplanting can begin.

4. Cutting propagation

Cutting propagation is similar to air layering for seedling raising. First, select branches produced within one year that are thick and strong, have a large amount of flowering and fruiting, and are uninjured as the cuttings. Then, when cutting, prevent the cut from being too large; keep it as smooth as possible to prevent wound infection. After cutting, place the branches in a solution such as acetic acid for root promotion, and treat them well to increase the rooting rate of the cuttings. After treatment, insert the branches vertically into the prepared substrate, strengthen management, and promote branch growth.

The above is a brief introduction to the propagation methods for Sichuan pepper trees. There is also grafting propagation, but its usage rate is not high, and it is relatively troublesome to carry out, so it is not suitable for large-scale propagation. Therefore, everyone must carefully choose the propagation method. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only. Thank you for reading and supporting us.
