Dendrobium nobile is a type of dendrobium, also known as "flat grass," "spider orchid," and so on. Dendrobium nobile is mainly cultivated in Guizhou and Sichuan in China, and is especially famous as the Dendrobium nobile of Chishui, Guizhou, and has also been approved by the State Quality Inspection Administration as a National Geographical Indication Protected Product. So how do you cultivate Dendrobium nobile? What are the requirements for cultivation? Now let's follow along with the editor and learn about its cultivation methods.

1. Cultivation Preparation

Dendrobium nobile has very strict requirements for its growing environment. Generally, the annual average temperature must be higher than ten degrees Celsius, the lowest winter temperature must exceed three degrees Celsius, and the frost period must not exceed fifteen days. The cultivation site should be chosen in a half-shade, half-sun area, and the humidity generally should not be lower than eighty percent. The best tree species for cultivating Dendrobium nobile are vigorous trees such as the Huangjue tree, pear tree, and camphor tree. The cultivation site must have rocks, and the rocks must have moss growing on them. After choosing the site, carry out land preparation, and on the rock surface just dig planting holes at a row spacing of forty cm and a plant spacing of thirty cm.

2. Propagation Methods

There are generally two propagation methods for Dendrobium nobile, namely tissue rapid propagation and division/cutting propagation. Tissue rapid propagation requires about fifteen days of hardening off, and once the leaves of the tissue-cultured seedlings are dark green, they can be taken out of the bottles and planted. For division/cutting propagation, select robust one-year-old or two-year-old plants free of pests and diseases as stock plants, then cut off the overly long roots on the plants as well as broken branches, dead branches, and other parts unsuitable for planting, and finally divide them into small clumps for planting.

3. Scientific Planting

The best time to plant Dendrobium nobile is March to April in spring and August to September in autumn, and spring planting in particular gives the best survival rate, yield, and quality. There are two planting methods for Dendrobium nobile, namely the rock-attached planting method and the tree-attached planting method. When planting, we all need to fix the Dendrobium nobile plants onto the rocks or tree trunks. If planting by the tree-attached method, planting is generally done from top to bottom; while the rock-attached planting method requires planting according to the corresponding row spacing and plant spacing.

4. Field Management

The field management of Dendrobium nobile is not very different from the management of dendrobium cultivation. After planting, we must maintain a certain humidity, while also preventing excessive moisture. Topdressing is generally carried out in the second year, mainly with decomposed farmyard manure, and also with special dendrobium fertilizer and dendrobium nutrient solution and other nutrients, and topdressing twice a year is enough. We must promptly remove the weeds around the growing dendrobium. Weeding is generally chosen on cloudy and rainy days, so that the root system of the dendrobium will not be damaged. When the dendrobium is growing very vigorously, we also need to prune and shape it appropriately to maintain reasonable ventilation and light penetration in the field. If it is dendrobium that has grown for many years, then part of the old roots need to be cut off, which can promote the growth of new plants and improve the yield and quality of Dendrobium nobile.

5. Pest and Disease Control

Under inadequate management or the influence of climate conditions and various other factors, Dendrobium nobile will also suffer from some relatively serious pests and diseases. The most common diseases include soft rot, black spot, and anthracnose, and we can usually use carbendazim for control, and can also use Kebo and thiophanate-methyl respectively for control. The main pests are snails, Fiorinia scale insects, red spider mites, and so on. We can use lime to control snails; for Fiorinia scale insects, dimethoate is often used for control; and for red spider mites, low-toxicity acaricides are used for control, and the control effect of dicofol is very good.
