The Latest Control Methods for Pests and Diseases of Jiaogulan
Jiaogulan is a plant whose every part is treasured: its roots, stems, leaves and seeds can all be used medicinally in addition to being made into tea. It has anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties and helps relieve cough and phlegm, and is now mostly used as a tonic and strengthening medicine. However, during cultivation, the damage caused by pests and diseases can affect its yield and quality. Let's take a look below at the control methods for pests and diseases of Jiaogulan.
1. Powdery mildew
Powdery mildew is the main fungal disease of Jiaogulan. When it occurs, small white mold spots appear on the leaves, and as the disease develops, the mold spots gradually spread outward, forming large mold patches. When humidity is high, it spreads rapidly, causing the entire leaf surface to be covered with a white powdery substance. In severe cases, the leaves turn yellow and curl.
Control methods: When diseased plants are found, pull them out promptly and take them out of the field to prevent spread to other plants. Strengthen fertilizer and water management to increase the plants' disease resistance. In the early stage of the disease, spraying with thiophanate-methyl solution gives good control results.
2. Leaf spot
Leaf spot is also one of the fungal diseases of Jiaogulan, mainly damaging the leaves. When it occurs, water-soaked lesions first appear at the leaf tip or leaf margin and gradually spread toward the center. Later, the lesions become yellow necrotic spots. In severe cases, the leaves of the entire plant rot and fall off, causing the plant to die.
Control methods: Strengthen fertilizer and water management to increase disease resistance. In winter, thoroughly clean the garden to reduce pathogenic fungi. When the disease occurs, spraying with carbendazim and Bordeaux mixture can be used for control.
3. Southern blight
This is also a fungal disease, mainly damaging the stems, leaves and root system. When it occurs, it starts from the stems near the ground and gradually spreads to the leaves. The affected stems turn dark brown and grow white silk-like mycelium. Finally, the plant rots, wilts and gradually dies.
Control methods: When diseased plants are found, pull them out promptly and take them out of the field to be burned. Disinfect and sterilize the diseased planting holes properly. In winter, remove diseased and residual plants to reduce overwintering sources of the disease. When the disease occurs, spraying with chlorothalonil can be used for control.
4. Cutworms
Cutworms are the main underground pests of Jiaogulan, with both adults and larvae causing damage. The larvae emerge at night to feed, constantly gnawing on the tender parts of the leaves and damaging the growing nodes, causing poor plant growth. They can bite through the stems and leaves of seedlings, resulting in missing plants.
Control methods: Thoroughly clean the garden in winter, remove weeds and dead branches, and eliminate overwintering larvae and pupae. Light trapping can be used to kill adults and reduce egg laying. During the seedling stage, poisoned bait can be used to kill the larvae.
