The latest planting techniques and methods tutorial for Panicled Codonopsis (Codonopsis convolvulacea)
Panicled Codonopsis is a plant of the genus Codonopsis in the Campanulaceae family, also known as chicken-kidney ginseng, pearl ginseng, and white sweet potato. Pearl ginseng is a powerful medicinal herb whose main effects are stopping bleeding and promoting tissue regeneration; it can also tonify lung deficiency and treat cough due to lung deficiency. So how should Panicled Codonopsis be planted? Follow along with the editor to see the detailed introduction.
1. Site selection and land preparation
Panicled Codonopsis prefers a fertile and moist environment and is suitable for growing in neutral or slightly acidic soil that is loose, well-drained, slightly sloped, and rich in humus. It is not suitable for continuous cropping and is afraid of waterlogging and clay. When planting, be sure to choose a field whose previous crop was a grass-family plant, or choose wasteland or a plot that has been out of cultivation for more than 4 years. Before planting, plow several times and do a good job of soil disinfection and sterilization. If the soil fertility is poor, you can also apply some organic fertilizer as base fertilizer in an appropriate amount. After shaping and raking level, make high beds and prepare for sowing and planting. In addition, Panicled Codonopsis generally grows wild in understory environments and is afraid of strong light, so if artificial cultivation is done in an understory environment, the shade among the trees is suitable for its growth; if it is on flat land, a shade shed must be built well.
2. Sowing and seedling raising
Generally, seed propagation is used. The sowing time is preferably in December of winter; too early makes it prone to rodent damage, and too late leads to poor growth. Use the broadcast sowing method, spread the seeds evenly over the plot, and control the plant and row spacing well. Generally, 4-5 kg of seed is used per mu. After sowing, cover with a layer of 3 cm fire-soil ash, then cover with grass to keep warm and moist. After the seedlings emerge, remove the covering grass in time so the seedlings can emerge safely, and do a good job of thinning and weeding. When the seedlings grow to 3-5 cm, final thinning can be carried out, while strengthening fertilizer and water management to promote seedling growth.
3. Transplanting and field planting
Transplanting and field planting generally begin in autumn of the second year, from September to October. When lifting seedlings for transplanting, be careful not to damage the overwintering buds. Remove the aboveground stems and place them in a cool, ventilated place for later use. After lifting the seedlings, they should be planted immediately to avoid weak plant growth and a low survival rate. When planting, apply 1500-2000 kg of decomposed barnyard manure and 50 kg of compound fertilizer per mu as base fertilizer. In order to reduce disease and improve the survival rate of field planting, before planting, carry out chemical disinfection and sterilization treatment on the seedlings, then open holes at a plant and row spacing of 15 cm × 15 cm for planting. The planting depth is about 5 cm. After planting, cover with soil and press firmly, then water thoroughly once.
4. Field management
After field planting, weed frequently to keep the field clean. After the rainy season, loosen the soil in time to increase soil permeability and prevent hardening, which is unfavorable to plant growth. Also topdress in time with diluted human and livestock manure water, phosphate fertilizer, compound fertilizer, and farmyard manure, etc., to promote plant growth. Generally, the first topdressing is applied at the flowering stage, with about 300 kg of human and livestock manure water per mu; the second is at the full flowering stage, with 200-300 kg of human and livestock manure water and 30 kg of phosphate fertilizer per mu, to promote fruit ripening and rhizome growth. Before winter, combined with overwintering measures, apply 300 kg of barnyard manure and farmyard manure per mu to help the plants overwinter safely.
