Thesium chinense, also known as Bai Ru Cao, Xi Xu Cao and Qing Long Cao, has its whole plant used as medicine. It has the effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, tonifying the kidney and securing essence, and can treat conditions such as heatstroke, acute mastitis, pneumonia and tonsillitis. Thesium chinense is widely distributed across both northern and southern parts of China, often growing in sandy grass clusters or beside stone ridges, so how should it be cultivated? Let us take a look together.

1. Site Selection and Land Preparation

Thesium chinense prefers light and a warm, humid environment, and can also tolerate a certain degree of drought. When planting, it is enough to choose ordinary plots with high, dry terrain and good drainage. To obtain high yields, it is advisable to choose fertile, loose soil; soil that is too poor will affect the number and quality of its flowers. Because Thesium chinense is a perennial herbaceous plant, base fertilizer must be applied before planting. The base fertilizer should be mainly organic fertilizer, applying 2500 kg of decomposed farmyard manure and 50 kg of superphosphate per mu. After shaping and raking level, form ridges or beds for later use.

2. Sowing and Raising Seedlings

Direct sowing or seedling transplanting can be used. When the fruit matures each year from July to August, collect the seeds. For direct sowing, carry out spring sowing in mid-to-late April, or autumn sowing in October to November. On the prepared ground, open furrows at a row spacing of 20 cm and sow in drills, covering with 1-2 cm of soil. Use 0.75-1 kg of seed per mu. After sowing, press lightly and water; seedlings generally emerge after half a month. For seedling transplanting, generally sow in drills on a seedbed in March of spring, cover with 1 cm of soil after sowing, keep the seedbed moist at all times, and control the temperature at 15-20 degrees; seedlings emerge after about 10 days. Strengthen management between seedlings, and when the seedlings grow to 6-10 cm they can be transplanted. Try to choose the afternoon after rainy days for transplanting, as the survival rate is high at this time, and control the plant and row spacing at 20×25 cm when transplanting.

3. Field Management

Thesium chinense plants are short and small, so during the growth period weeds must be removed frequently, so as to prevent weeds from affecting the growth of the plants and competing with the plants for water and fertilizer. In addition, if weeds grow taller than the plants, they can easily breed pests and diseases and affect the normal photosynthesis of the plants. For one-year-old seedlings after loosening soil and weeding, or for seedlings grown for 2-3 years, after fertilizing and watering, cover with wheat straw, wheat bran, sawdust or the like. This can strengthen the decomposition of microorganisms in the soil, maintain moisture, reduce weeds, and create a good growing environment for Thesium chinense.

4. Fertilizer and Water Management

Thesium chinense likes a dry environment by nature. Apart from appropriate watering during the early seed germination period and seedling growth period, it does not need frequent watering in the later growth stage, so as to avoid affecting its growth. After the rainy season, drain promptly to avoid root rot. Each year in spring and winter, apply fertilizer once each time. This can promote root growth and increase yield. Fertilization should be mainly phosphate fertilizer, applying 20-25 kg per mu. During the peak growth season, a potassium fertilizer solution can be sprayed to improve the plant's disease resistance, which has a clear effect on increasing yield.
