Lemongrass is a perennial herbaceous plant of the grass family, also known as lemon grass, and is one of the common herbs. It is often used to extract essential oil, and the whole plant can be used as medicine, having the effects of disinfecting, sterilizing, and treating neuralgia and muscle pain. So how do you plant it? Let's take a look.

1. Site selection and land preparation

Lemongrass does not have high requirements for soil, and it can be planted in ordinary soil, but it should not be planted in saline-alkali land or sandy soil. In addition, it is afraid of drought, so the planting site should have convenient drainage and irrigation, and the previous crop is best to be cereals, beans, or vegetables. After selecting the site, plow the plot 20 cm deep, apply decomposed farmyard manure as fertilizer, and then form ridges or beds. Because lemongrass seeds are relatively small, it must be shaped and harrowed level, and then sown when the time comes.

2. Sowing

Lemongrass is sown from March to April. There are two methods: direct sowing and raising seedlings for transplanting. Direct sowing can also be divided into drilling or broadcasting. For drilling, open furrows on the bed surface or on the ridge at a row spacing of 30 cm and a furrow depth of 7-10 cm. After mixing the seeds with plant ash, sow them into the furrows, pay attention to the plant spacing between seeds, and then cover with soil. If the soil is dry, water appropriately. For broadcasting, first water the soil thoroughly to keep it moist, then evenly scatter the seeds on the seedbed, cover with soil, and water. When broadcasting, pay attention to the density. Raising seedlings for transplanting can be carried out after the previous two methods; when the seedlings grow to a certain height, transplant them elsewhere.

3. Field management

After sowing and before the seedlings emerge, do a good job of weeding so that there are no weeds in the field, which is beneficial for the seedlings to emerge. When the seedlings grow to 4-6 cm, carry out the first thinning combined with weeding, and the second thinning at 13-17 cm. When thinning, remove diseased, insect-damaged, and weak seedlings, and keep robust seedlings. The surplus seedlings can be transplanted. Each year, carry out 3-4 times of intertillage and weeding, and apply fertilizer once after each weeding to speed up seedling growth. Generally, apply human and livestock manure water, and nitrogen fertilizer can also be applied in spring and summer.
