Galangal, also known as greater galangal, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the ginger family, mainly distributed in the southwestern region of China. Galangal has lush, bright and colorful leaves and high ornamental value. Moreover, galangal is also a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, with effects such as dispelling cold and relieving pain, and dispersing cold and warming. It is generally used to treat problems such as stomach cold and abdominal pain, and its medicinal effect is relatively strong. So how should galangal be planted? Below, let the editor introduce the cultivation techniques of galangal to everyone!

1. Site selection and land preparation

Galangal is suitable for growing in soil with a thick soil layer, sufficient fertility, loose and permeable texture, and normal drainage and irrigation, with sandy soil being the best. After selecting the land, in the winter of the year before planting, remove weeds and residues of previous crops from the soil, and burn them into plant ash to use as fertilizer. Then carry out land preparation work, breaking up and leveling the soil before the spring of the following year. The deep plowing depth should be maintained at about 30 cm. Because galangal has relatively strong growth ability, there is no need to make beds during land preparation, and cultivation is generally mainly by clearing and planting. It can be intercropped with crops such as pineapple and lemongrass in the field.

2. Rhizome propagation

The propagation method of galangal is generally mainly rhizome propagation. When harvesting galangal, we should select about 7 concentrated strong buds grown within two years as rhizomes. The strong buds should be sufficiently plump and guaranteed to be free of pests and diseases, then cut the strong buds into small sections of about 14 cm, with each small section retaining 3 nodes. This is usually done in spring and autumn, and then planting holes are dug with good control of planting density on the previously prepared soil. Place 1-2 sections in each planting hole. Then cover with fine soil and press it firmly, water thoroughly to settle the roots, and promote the rhizomes to take root and sprout.

3. Timely transplanting

If sowing in spring, transplanting around Qingming Festival is generally suitable. On the prepared soil, apply sufficient base fertilizer, paying attention to the amount, mainly 2600-2800 kg/mu, to improve soil fertility. Then also pay attention to controlling the plant and row spacing well, generally mainly by hole planting. The depth of the planting holes should be controlled at about 18 cm and the width at about 28 cm. Then place one section of rooted rhizome into each planting hole, filling soil while placing. After transplanting, cover with fine soil, water, and do a good job of weeding to improve the transplanting survival rate.

4. Field management

When the seedlings grow to about 5 cm, do a good job of thinning, following the principle of keeping the strong and removing the weak, and control the spacing between seedlings at about 5 cm. Also, during the seedling stage, pay attention to doing a good job of weeding, no fewer than two times, and after the rows close, weed appropriately every quarter. Then, according to the weather and soil moisture conditions, do a good job of watering, keep the soil moist, and promote the tillering and rhizome growth of galangal. Also pay attention to timely topdressing to meet the nutrients needed during galangal growth, and finally properly intercrop crops with low nutrient requirements in the field to improve land utilization.

The above is a brief introduction to galangal cultivation techniques. Galangal has relatively strong growth ability, but we need to do a good job of field management to enhance the resistance of galangal and ensure its healthy growth.
