How to grow Tiankuizi (Semiaquilegia adoxoides)? Latest planting techniques and method tutorial
Tiankuizi (Semiaquilegia adoxoides) is a perennial herb of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae); its tuberous roots can be used as medicine, having the effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, reducing swelling and dissipating masses, and it also has health-promoting benefits, being suitable both as medicine and food. So how should Tiankuizi be grown? Let's take a look together.
1. Site selection and land preparation
When planting Tiankuizi, choose plots with convenient drainage and irrigation and soil rich in organic matter. If it is flatland, adopt the high-ridge cultivation method, with a ridge width of 1-1.2 m. Apply 1000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure per mu, together with 90-150 kg of nitrogen-potassium compound fertilizer as base fertilizer. A corner of the plot can be used as a seedling-raising bed; the seedling bed requires loose, fertile soil with good drainage.
2. Propagation methods
Tiankuizi can be propagated by seed and by cuttings to raise seedlings. It blooms in spring and sets fruit in summer; after the seeds are collected, they can be sown immediately, either in autumn or spring. Sprouting occurs about ten-odd days after sowing, and when the seedlings grow 5-6 true leaves, they can be planted out. Cutting propagation is generally used for large-scale seedling cultivation. Take cuttings when the plant is growing; open shallow furrows on the prepared seedling bed with a row spacing of about 10 cm, then cut 8-10 cm branches from the plant, remove the lower leaves, keep 2-3 leaves at the top, insert them into the furrow at a plant spacing of 6 cm and a depth of two-thirds of the cutting, press lightly with your hand, and water thoroughly. Then cover with a shade net; roots and sprouts will appear after about one week, at which point the shade net can be removed and one fertilization applied. When the seedlings grow to more than 10 cm, they can be planted out.
3. Field management
The best time for planting out is late March. The planting density depends on soil fertility; when fertility is good, it can be appropriately denser, and otherwise it should be sparser. Before the plants close the rows, loosen the soil and weed in time to promote plant growth. Tiankuizi is a perennial plant; to grow quickly and achieve high yields, its fertilizer demand is also very high. Therefore, during the peak growing season, topdress once every half a month, applying 1000 kg of human excrement and urine and 30 kg of compound fertilizer per mu, and during the harvest season, apply more than 1000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure per mu. The principle of watering is to keep it dry rather than wet; in clear weather, water generally once a week, and in drought, water twice a week. In the rainy season, do a good job of drainage.
4. Pest and disease control
Pests and diseases are the main factors harming the yield and quality of Tiankuizi. First, do a good job of agricultural control: adopt high-ridge cultivation, apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and improve the plant's disease resistance. When root rot occurs, spray or drench the roots with Anke mancozeb or carbendazim; for leaf spot, anthracnose and sclerotinia, spray mancozeb for control; for insect pests, spray trichlorfon, dichlorvos and other agents for control.
