Akebia fruit is a kind of Chinese medicinal herb, but many people are not familiar with it. It is the ripe fruit of Akebia trifoliata or Akebia quinata. At present, it is mainly distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui in China, and has the effects of soothing the liver and regulating qi, promoting blood circulation and relieving pain, and promoting urination. It can be used to treat symptoms such as painful menstruation and amenorrhea, distending pain in the epigastrium and hypochondrium, and difficult urination. So do you know how to grow Akebia fruit? Today, follow the editor to get a simple understanding of it first.

1. Land Selection and Preparation

Akebia fruit is best planted in loose sandy loam soil, and of course, soil that is rich in nutrients and contains plenty of humus or organic matter is best. Secondly, Akebia fruit is not cold-tolerant, so the planting site should be warm with good drainage, and it avoids strong light, making it suitable for planting on shady slopes. Deeply plow the soil at least about 20 cm, apply sufficient barnyard manure or compost, then plow the land again and mix the soil and fertilizer evenly. But note that before planting, the soil still needs to be turned once more, breaking the soil clods into fine pieces and raking them level, then making raised beds about 1.5 m wide, and it is ready for planting.

2. Propagation Methods

There are four propagation methods for Akebia fruit, namely seed propagation, layering propagation, root division propagation, and cutting propagation. Seed propagation is generally carried out by sowing in September and October each year; root division propagation is generally carried out by digging up roots from September to November each year for planting; layering propagation and cutting propagation can be carried out in all four seasons. One drawback of seed propagation is that the growth cycle of the seedlings is long and fruiting is late, so many growers do not like this method very much. Root division propagation generally can bear fruit in the same year after planting and grows quickly, making it the most popular planting method at present, but the planting quantity required is large, which increases the planting cost, and this is also an issue worth considering.

3. Transplanting and Field Planting

Before field planting, Akebia fruit still needs a period of seedling cultivation. For seed propagation, we generally transplant in the second year, while root division propagation can be planted in the same year, and cutting propagation requires waiting until the seedlings after cutting grow new roots before transplanting. Layering propagation is similar to cutting propagation, both waiting until the new plants grow new roots, after which they can be planted as individual plants. The row spacing for planting is generally 30 cm, and the plant spacing is about 20 cm.

4. Field Management

Akebia fruit is a plant with very strong resistance, so its field management is also very simple. After the Akebia fruit seedlings are transplanted and field planted, we usually water them one week later, which can improve the survival rate of the Akebia fruit seedlings. Secondly, during the growth of Akebia fruit, attention should be paid to weeding, so as to prevent nutrients from being absorbed by weeds and affecting the growth rate of the Akebia fruit seedlings. Also, when the Akebia fruit seedlings grow new branches, we need to set up trellises and tie the vines to promote the growth of the seedlings, and at the same time avoid the harm of insect pests and diseases to Akebia fruit. Finally, there is topdressing management. When the base fertilizer is sufficient, topdressing is rarely needed, but if topdressing is needed, it should also follow the principle of frequent application of thin fertilizer, mainly using farmyard manure, and not applying too much nitrogen fertilizer alone, so as to avoid excessive vegetative growth of the seedlings.

The above are the cultivation techniques for Akebia fruit. Here the editor is only briefly sharing with you its planting process and planting methods. If you want to learn about the detailed cultivation techniques of Akebia fruit, you can follow us or leave us a message for consultation.
