Chinese yam, also called Huaishan, is surely a Chinese medicinal vegetable that everyone is very familiar with. It has extremely high medicinal value, and its cultivation and consumption history in our country is very long. Now the market for Chinese yam is also relatively good, and more and more people are growing it. When growing Chinese yam, how to propagate it is a very important task, and it is the key to ensuring whether it can be grown continuously and normally. Below, the editor brings you the propagation methods for Chinese yam. Let's take a look!

1. Propagation by reed head

When Chinese yam matures each year from October to November, dig out the roots of the Chinese yam, then select reed heads with a short neck, plump and full buds, thick growth, and no wounds, pests, or diseases as the propagation mother bodies. Then break them off at a position about 18 cm from the reed head, and place them in the sun to dry for about 3 days to promote wound healing. Then dig pits in the soil for storage. When the overwintering ground temperature remains above 5 degrees, do the work of deep plowing and fertilizing. Control the row spacing at about 40 cm and the plant spacing at about 18 cm, and make beds ready for planting. Water promptly after planting. Under normal management, roots will form and seedlings will emerge after about 2-3 weeks.

2. Propagation by bulbils

Bulbil propagation is mainly carried out through Chinese yam beans. First, after the Chinese yam matures, pick off the Chinese yam beans, then store them in dry sand. Take them out around February to April in spring, then dry them in the sun for a few days. Because Chinese yam beans have relatively strong germination ability and their disease resistance is also not weak. Therefore, generally no pre-sprouting is needed. When sowing, control the plant and row spacing at about 10*22 cm. Dig the sowing holes well, put about 3 Chinese yam beans in each hole, then cover with 5 cm of fine soil. Do the sowing management work well, and seedlings will emerge after about two weeks.

3. Propagation by tuberous roots

Tuberous root propagation, as the name suggests, is propagation using tuberous roots. First select mother roots that are 1 m long and about 3 cm in diameter. Then cut the tuberous roots into small sections about 18 cm long, and mark each small section well so that they can be identified and managed later. After marking, dip the cut surface into an appropriate amount of lime powder. Then expose them to the sun. When drying the seeds, pay attention to wind and rain conditions to avoid injuring the tuberous roots. When cracks appear on the small sections, the temperature is above 13 degrees, and the average low temperature is around 11 degrees, they can be planted. When planting, pay attention to digging the water ditches well, maintaining good planting density, digging the planting holes well, placing the tuberous roots vertically, covering with soil and forming ridges, and doing the management well.

The above is a brief introduction to the propagation methods of Chinese yam. There are relatively many propagation methods for Chinese yam. No matter which propagation method is used, each has different advantages and disadvantages, and each is also suitable for different environments and planting scales. Therefore, when propagating, everyone should pay attention to choosing a reasonable propagation method. That is all for today's introduction.
