How to Propagate Akebia? A Detailed Guide to the Latest Propagation Methods
Akebia, also known as mountain tongcao, wild papaya and others, is a deciduous woody vine. Its vine stem can be used as medicine, with effects of promoting diuresis to treat strangury, clearing the heart and relieving restlessness, and promoting menstruation and lactation. It has relatively high medicinal value. Nowadays it is widely cultivated across the country, and how to propagate it before planting is an important matter. Let's take a look at the detailed introduction below with the editor.
1. Seed propagation
When the fruit matures in September-October, pick the fruit, eat the flesh, and keep the seeds for storage and later use, preparing to sow in autumn. Before sowing, first rub and wash the seeds once with alkaline water, then rinse once with clean water, remove and dry them. Choose a plot with deep soil, loose and fertile soil, and good drainage; after land preparation, use it as a seedbed, evenly broadcast the treated seeds on the seedbed, cover with a thin layer of soil, then water to keep the soil moist. Seedlings will emerge before long, and after 1 year of cultivation they can be transplanted, but fruiting requires 3-4 years, which takes a relatively long time, so it is not commonly used in production.
2. Layering propagation
The vine stems of Akebia have strong sprouting ability. During the vine stem growth period, bury 1-2 year old branches and vines into the soil. To speed up rooting, a wound can be cut at the tip of the branch and vine, and roots will form in about 1 month. When the root system has grown to a certain extent, it can be separated from the mother plant and planted elsewhere. This method can be carried out all year round, and generally it can bloom and bear fruit in the second year after planting, so it is relatively commonly used in production.
3. Root division propagation
Root division propagation is generally carried out in early spring before sprouting. Dig out the plant with roots, divide it into several plants, and transplant them elsewhere. Generally, without cutting off the branches and vines, transplanting in the same year can bear fruit in the same year.
4. Cutting propagation
Cuttings can be taken all year round. First select healthy 1-2 year old branches and vines from the mother plant that are free of pests and diseases as cuttings, and cut them into lengths of about 10 cm. Then insert them into a prepared seedbed; the insertion depth can be half or one third. After cutting, water frequently to keep the soil moist, and at the same time build a shade net to facilitate rooting and survival. If conditions permit, soak the cuttings in rooting powder before cutting, and the survival rate can reach more than 95%.
