What are the latest precautions for growing Stemona?
Stemona, also called woman's grass, is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Stemona. Its tubers are used as medicine, and it is a toxic medicinal material. In our daily lives it can be used to repel mosquitoes and insects, and after processing it can be taken to relieve cough. At present, Stemona is mainly grown in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hubei and other places in China. So what do you need to pay attention to when growing Stemona? Let's find out together below.
1. Soil
Stemona likes warmth, moisture and shade, is cold-tolerant, and fears waterlogging, so when choosing a planting site we need to select according to these characteristics. Stemona is suitable for growing in areas with good soil structure, sufficient fertility, rich in organic matter and humus, good drainage, and close to a water source. Secondly, the soil at the planting site should preferably be sandy loam, as this kind of soil has better permeability. At the same time, note that clay or heavy clay as well as sandy soil are not the best choices for growing Stemona.
2. Time
Sowing time is also something we need to pay attention to. Generally speaking, Stemona can be sown in spring and autumn, which is mainly due to the climate differences between northern and southern China. So in different regions, the climatic conditions differ, and therefore the sowing time is also different. In northern China, spring sowing is generally carried out, and the best sowing period is around Qingming, which is roughly March or April. In southern China, autumn sowing is carried out, generally in August or September each year.
3. Water
Stemona has a relatively large demand for water, so we need to water frequently during the growing process. After Stemona is sown, watering is generally done during dry periods to keep the soil moist. After the seedlings emerge, the amount of watering should be appropriately reduced to avoid lowering the soil temperature and affecting the growth of Stemona. After Stemona is planted out, water promptly when the weather is relatively dry to keep soil moisture at around 50 percent, but in heavy rain you need to drain water to prevent waterlogging in the field, which can cause root rot and affect the yield and quality of Stemona.
4. Management
⟦NL>The field management work for Stemona is something we especially need to pay attention to. Here I will mainly briefly explain a few aspects to everyone. First, each year you need to carry out intertillage and weeding twice and topdressing three times; second, when Stemona has grown to about 15 cm, supports should be set up and the Stemona vines guided to grow upward; also, during the flowering period of Stemona, we should remove the flower buds to reduce nutrient consumption, but those kept for seed must not be removed; finally, Stemona likes shade, so it is best to carry out intercropping, which can also make full use of the land resources. Of course, when intercropping, note that it is best to plant crops such as corn or sorghum.
Growing Stemona is actually not very different from growing other crops, but some things do need to be distinguished from other crops during the growing process, so as to promote high yield and high quality.
