Forsythia, also known as Huangshoudan, has extremely high medicinal and ornamental value. What growers least want to see when planting it is pests and diseases, which cause great harm to the plant and, in severe cases, can cause it to wither and die. So what pests and diseases affect Forsythia? How should they be controlled? Let's take a look at the detailed introduction below.

1. Leaf spot disease

The main disease of Forsythia is leaf spot disease, a fungal disease. The pathogen first infects the leaf margins, then gradually spreads toward the middle of the leaf as the disease develops, and in the late stages of the disease it can lead to the death of the plant. Leaf spot disease occurs mainly under high temperatures, generally breaking out in May, with July to August being the peak period of the disease. High-temperature, high-humidity climates and poorly ventilated environments favour the spread of the disease, and the pathogen multiplies in a short time, ultimately causing the death of the plant.

Control method: To control leaf spot disease in Forsythia, first prune the branches frequently, thinning out tangled branches and overly dense branches to increase the plant's air circulation and maintain good ventilation. When planting Forsythia, strengthen its fertiliser and water management, pay attention to balanced nutrition, and avoid applying too much nitrogen fertiliser when fertilising, so as to prevent the plant from growing leggy, with luxuriant branches and leaves, causing the branches and leaves to close over and favouring the reproduction of the pathogen. When the plant is found to have leaf spot disease, promptly spray chlorothalonil and carbendazim solutions, once every 10 days, spraying continuously 3-4 times, which can effectively control the disease.

2. Pest insects

The main pest insects of Forsythia include cicadas, scale insects, moths, leaf-rolling weevils, aphids, and pine-oak caterpillars, among others. They harm different parts of the Forsythia, seriously affecting the plant's growth, and in severe cases causing flowers and leaves to drop and the plant to wilt.

Control method: For the above pest infestations, different methods can be adopted for control. For cicadas, imidacloprid suspension concentrate can be sprayed for control; for scale insects, jiemanling or sukemie can be sprayed on the branches during the egg stage; for leaf-rolling weevils, high-permeability fenoxycarb emulsifiable concentrate can be sprayed during the adult stage; for moths, kangfuduo concentrate or nicotine anabasine can be sprayed for control; for pine-oak caterpillars, high-permeability fenoxycarb can be sprayed during the larval stage for control.
