Isatis root, also called indigo root, has a root mainly used for making medicine. It has strong adaptability and can grow in various places, has a planting history of many years, and is a perennial herbaceous plant. There is relatively rich experience in growing Isatis root, and much accumulated experience in management after planting has also been spread. Below, we will explain how to manage Isatis root well when growing it in the field.

1. Cultivation and Weeding

After planting, cultivation should be carried out once after every relatively long period, because over time, human trampling or heavy weed growth can firm the soil, and after rain, the soil can be compacted and hardened, all of which affect root growth. Therefore, cultivation must be done regularly. When weeds are found during cultivation, they must be pulled out to avoid competing for nutrients.

2. Thinning and Transplanting Seedlings

Generally, seedlings should first be raised and then transplanted into the field, so during the seedling stage, after the seedlings emerge completely, they should be checked once and diseased seedlings and yellowed, weak seedlings should be pulled out. Then, seedlings that are too dense should be transplanted to a new seedbed to continue growing, and finally, when the seedlings grow to about 6 cm, they can be transplanted in batches to the main planting area.

3. Topdressing and Water Control

Topdressing is generally applied when watering after transplanting the seedlings into the field and after a period of recovery from transplanting; generally, mild manure water can be applied. Urea can also be applied in furrows between rows as topdressing, and urea must be covered with soil when used, with about 25 jin applied per mu. Later, it is mainly used when harvesting leaves, about twice or so, mainly applying compound farmyard manure. Or wood ash together with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. Cutting leaves twice during the vigorous growth period is to inhibit vegetative growth, so nitrogen fertilizer should not be applied.

4. Disease and Pest Prevention

The main disease is downy mildew, whose main symptom is damage to leaves, producing white mold-like material on the underside of leaves, with no visible lesions, but in severe cases the plants wither. The main thing is to prevent excessively high humidity, and then at the very beginning use chlorothalonil spray for control. The main pest is aphid larvae, which damage leaves, gather in groups to eat the leaf mesophyll, leaving only the stems, curling the leaves and causing the plants to stop growing. Dimethoate emulsion is generally used for control.

Doing the above work well means completing most of the tasks in Isatis root planting management. There may also be some unexpected situations that occur, and those also belong to our field management work. Field management work determines the final planting results.
