Spider plant, also known as hanging spider plant, ribbon plant, airplane plant and so on, is an evergreen herbaceous plant native to South Africa. Because spider plant has strong adaptability, is relatively easy to grow, and can also effectively absorb harmful substances from the air, it is one of the most common green plants for indoor growing. Spider plant can also be grown hydroponically, which is even simpler and more hygienic. Below, Qinnong Network will introduce the hydroponic methods for spider plant.

Hydroponic Spider Plant Growing Method One

1. Container selection: a transparent glass container will do.

2. Nutrient solution preparation: experience shows that per liter, add 1.8g calcium nitrate, 0.187g ammonium sulfate, 0.62g monopotassium phosphate, 0.54g magnesium sulfate, 0.62g potassium chloride, and 0.0278g ferrous phosphate. After dissolving, dilute with water to 1L and mix evenly.

3. Preparing the spider plant: dig the spider plant out of the soil, wash the soil off the roots with water, cut off old and rotten roots, keep the fibrous roots, remove diseased leaves, and keep healthy young leaves.

4. Fixing in place: insert the prepared spider plant into the bottle and fix it with glass balls, stones or similar materials.

5. Management and care: after placing it in the container, put the spider plant indoors or in a shady place.

6. Replacing the culture solution: for container hydroponics, add water and replace the nutrient solution about every 7 days.

Hydroponic Spider Plant Growing Method Two

1. Choosing a container: generally, the vase should be chosen according to the size of the hydroponic spider plant; it is best to choose one with a neck at the 1/3 point, which can be fixed or not fixed.

2. Choosing hydroponic seedlings: you can choose newly born small plantlets on the runners, preferably with aerial roots; you can also wash the soil off a soil-grown spider plant and then grow it hydroponically, but be sure to disinfect it before hydroponics.

3. Starting hydroponics: choose a good vase according to the size of the spider plant; when growing hydroponically, do not add too much water, just enough to submerge 1/3 to 1/2 of the root system.

4. Care and management: change the water once every 2 to 3 days. For those changed from soil culture to hydroponics, some roots will rot at first, and these need to be cut off when changing the water, and it is best to disinfect them. When new water roots are 3 to 5 cm long, add nutrient solution to the water; the amount does not need to be large.

The care environment should preferably have scattered light, and it should not be too shady or exposed to the sun. If leaf tips dry out, prune them promptly.

Hydroponic Spider Plant Growing Method Three

1. Container: the container bottle can be single-layer or double-layer. A single-layer bottle is a bottomless plastic bottle or bottomless ceramic bottle used to plant spider plant. For a double-layer bottle, use a plastic sieve as the upper layer, and the lower-layer bottle is a bottomless bottle vessel; plant the spider plant in the upper plastic sieve and let the spider plant roots hang down into the bottle.

2. Taking seedlings: take a potted or field-grown spider plant out of the pot or dig it up from the ground, remove the soil from the roots, wash the roots with clean water, cut off old roots and rotten roots, keep the fibrous roots, cut off some leaves (old leaves, pest- or disease-damaged leaves), and keep robust leaves, generally leaving 6 to 10 leaves.

3. Potting: for the single-layer bottle potting method, insert the prepared spider plant into the bottle, tie the bottle mouth tightly with sponge and insert a plastic straw, which is used for supplying water. Let the spider plant stand upright, put clean water and flower nutrient solution into the bottle, and let the spider plant roots soak in the water to grow. For the double-layer bottle cultivation method, plant the spider plant on the plastic sieve, with the roots passing through the small holes of the plastic sieve into the lower bottle; put ceramic material or small stones (large particles) in the sieve, let the spider plant stand upright, and put clean water and flower nutrient solution into the lower bottle. After potting is complete, place the spider plant indoors or in a shady place for management.

4. Management

① Water: for single-layer container bottle cultivation, add water and flower nutrient solution once every 4 days, inputting water through the straw until full. For double-layer bottles, change the water once a week; when changing the water, pour out the bottle water, wash the container bottle clean, add clean water and flower nutrient solution, and then place the plastic sieve on the water bottle.

② Fertilizer: add flower nutrient solution at the same time as adding and changing water through the roots; for foliar top dressing, spray the branches and leaves once every 3 days with diluted flower nutrient solution.

③ Pest and disease control: if pests or diseases are found, spray the leaves with all-purpose powder mixed with water.

④ Promoting flowering: spider plant blooms half a year after potting. When it blooms, do not spray water on the flowers, to prevent premature flower drop. After the flowers wither, cut the flowers off from the branch tips to promote reblooming.

Common Questions About Growing Hydroponic Spider Plant

Q: How do you grow hydroponic spider plant?

A: It is too easy! Put it in a somewhat larger vase or goldfish tank, and just top up the water every few days. The water is best tap water that has been left standing for 24 hours. Do not put it in the sun; it is best to put it in a room on the shady side near a windowsill, and also spray the leaves with water often. During the growing season, you can appropriately add nutrient solution, or not add it at all.

Q: What nutrient solution should be added?

A: Just the ordinary hydroponic nutrient solution for keeping flowers and fish together sold at flower markets.

The above are several hydroponic methods for spider plant introduced by Qinnong Network for everyone. Do they all look very simple? So have you learned them yet? Spider plant can absorb most harmful substances in the air, such as carbon monoxide, benzene, formaldehyde, nicotine and so on. Growing it at home can be said to be growing a pot of “air purifier”, which is very suitable for growing in a new house. Friends whose homes have just been renovated might as well grow a pot of it.
