The Story and Legend of the Red Rose
In ancient Greece, legend says that Aphrodite, the goddess of love, was the most beautiful goddess in the world, and even Zeus, king of the gods, fell in love with her. However, Aphrodite rejected Zeus's love. Zeus turned love into hatred and forced Aphrodite to marry the ugliest of the gods, Hephaestus, the god of fire. Aphrodite was in extreme pain, for she had secretly fallen in love with the beautiful youth Adonis.
But then misfortune struck: one day, while Adonis was out hunting, a wild boar bit the artery in his foot, and the blood would not stop, and he fell to the ground. As he fell, he let out a long, miserable cry: “Aphrodite——" Hearing her lover's sorrowful call, Aphrodite rushed to rescue him. The stones and thorns in the forest cut her feet and hands, and her blood dripped all along the way. Yet by the time she reached Adonis's side, he had already bled out, and in the end she could not save her beloved. Aphrodite wept loudly, and with her weeping, wherever her blood had dripped along the way, clusters of beautiful red roses, so red they seemed about to drip, bloomed forth.
From then on, the red rose became a symbol of steadfast and unchanging love. But the red rose always bears thorns.
