Red spider lily is a perennial herbaceous plant with a nearly spherical bulb, 1-3 cm in diameter. It grows wild on shady, moist hillsides and along stream banks, and is also cultivated in gardens. It has high horticultural value, blooming before leaves emerge, with a flowering period from July to September and a fruiting period in October. Let us take a look below.

When does the red spider lily bloom?

The red spider lily usually blooms from July to September, with July being the peak blooming period. It is said that the three days around the spring equinox are called the spring Higan, and the three days around the autumn equinox are called the autumn Higan. The red spider lily blooms during the autumn Higan period, very punctually, which is why it is called Higan flower (equinox flower)!

Blooming conditions for the red spider lily

The red spider lily likes diffused light and does not like strong light, so the light should not be too intense. It needs acidic, sandy, breathable and well-draining soil. Bulbs generally need 2 to 3 years to bloom better.

Reasons why the red spider lily does not bloom and solutions

1. Soil problems

[Cause] The red spider lily naturally prefers acidic soil. Due to watering, the soil may gradually become alkaline, which can also cause the soil to harden, and the bulb may therefore lack oxygen or even rot.

[Solution] It is best to loosen the soil and sprinkle on ferrous sulfate solution, but do not add too much, otherwise the leaves will not be able to fall off normally.

2. Planting too deep

[Cause] If planted too deep, even the top of the bulb is covered by soil. Combined with soil that is too hard, it makes it difficult for the red spider lily to produce a flower stalk, resulting in failure to bloom.

[Solution] Reduce the planting depth, just like planting garlic.

3. Flower pot too small

[Cause] Because the flower pot used for planting is too small, the space for bulb growth is too cramped, which will cause some bulbs to grow deformed.

[Solution] Dig out the bulbs in October and replant them separately, with the same planting depth as above. If they still fail to send up flowers after separate planting, dig out the bulbs again and divide them once more.
