Maidenhair fern is also known as wire grass, maiden's hair, wire fern, water pig bristle soil, etc. Because its stems are slender and wire-colored, it is named maidenhair fern. It has strong adaptability, is easy to cultivate, and has extremely high ornamental value. Its plant shape is graceful and beautiful, making it one of the most common green plants in homes.

Let's take a look below at whether maidenhair fern can be grown in water!

Can Maidenhair Fern Be Grown in Water

Maidenhair fern can be grown in water. Maidenhair fern likes a humid environment. The suitable growing temperature is 21-25°C during the day and 12-15°C at night. At temperatures above 5°C, the leaves can still remain fresh and green, but below 5°C the leaves will suffer cold damage. It likes bright indirect light and is afraid of direct sunlight. It is one of the common hydroponic plants.

Hydroponic Method for Maidenhair Fern

First wash the roots of the maidenhair fern clean, disinfect them with potassium permanganate, then find a container and add clean water, with a suitable proportion of nutrient solution (the nutrient solution can be bought on the market), or fix it at the mouth of the container or on the water surface. Maidenhair fern is best planted on coral stone; just stick it on, then place the coral stone in water. After it survives, it grows very well. When growing it in water, note that the coral stone should be soaked in water to remove salt, the water should not submerge the head of the maidenhair fern, and in order to let the stone grow moss, it cannot be kept indoors for a long time.

Hydroponic Management of Maidenhair Fern

1. Changing water: when the weather is hot, change the water every 15-20 days; when it is cold, about every one and a half months. The water level should reach three-quarters of the way up the root system, and at the same time, spray water on the leaf surface frequently.

2. Temperature: Maidenhair fern likes warmth, and the suitable growing temperature for the environment is 13~22°C. Planting in spring in the south is excellent, and it is also possible in the north, but because maidenhair fern is not tolerant of high temperatures, the care methods are also different.

3. Light: Maidenhair fern likes a semi-shady environment. Never let maidenhair fern receive direct sunlight. It is suitable for growing in semi-shade, and ordinary indirect light is enough. Avoid light in summer, and avoid direct strong light.

4. Fertilizing: For hydroponic maidenhair fern, use nutrient solution for foliage plants.

5. Pruning: After autumn begins, as the temperature drops, maidenhair fern enters a stage of slow growth, and old leaves will gradually turn yellow. At this time, they should be cut off.
