Gemstone plant is a general term for a class of succulents; in common usage it broadly refers to rosette-shaped succulents, such as Pachyphytum 'Amethystinum' (winter beauty), Echeveria 'Hyalina' (jade butterfly), Graptopetalum paraguayense (ghost plant), Echeveria 'Black Prince' (black prince), Pachyphytum 'Peach Beauty' (peach beauty), and others. The fleshy, thick leaves are shaped just like gemstones, with multiple branches of leaves overlapping and clustering together, and the rosette-shaped leaf disc closely resembles a blooming lotus, hence the name. It has a unique form and is easy to care for, making it very suitable for home cultivation.

Growth Habits of Gemstone Plants

Gemstone plants prefer a warm, dry, and well-ventilated environment, and they like sunlight. They favor sandy loam rich in humus, but can also adapt to poor soil. They are extremely drought-tolerant; they can still grow even without being watered for several weeks, because each of their leaves is like a small reservoir, with water stored in the leaves for use during drought. They are also cold-tolerant, shade-tolerant, and tolerant of stuffy indoor environments, with extremely strong adaptability. In winter, the temperature should not be lower than 10°C. Plants kept in shaded places for a long time tend to become leggy with sparse leaves. South of the Yangtze River, they can be grown in the open ground.

Propagation Methods for Gemstone Plants

1. Leaf cutting: Lay a complete mature leaf flat on moist sandy soil, with the leaf surface facing up and the back of the leaf facing down. There is no need to cover it with soil. Place it in a cool place. After about 10 days, small leaf clusters and new roots will grow from the base of the leaf. Bury the root system into the soil. After that, let it get plenty of sunlight and water and fertilize appropriately, and it will gradually grow into a robust new plant.

2. Cuttings: Single leaves, tiller branches, or terminal branches can be used. The length of the cut cuttings is not limited, but after the cut surface has dried, remove the lower leaves and insert them into a sand bed. After insertion, they generally take root in about 20 days. The cutting medium should not be too wet, otherwise the cut surface is prone to yellowing and rotting. When the roots are 2-3 cm long, pot them up. Leaf cuttings can also be used.

Cultivation Methods for Gemstone Plants

1. Soil: The potting soil for gemstone plants should be loose and fertile, with good drainage and aeration. You can use half leaf mold or peat soil and half coarse sand or vermiculite, and mix in a small amount of calcium-rich materials such as bone meal. Use after mixing evenly. Because the soil is moist, newly planted plants do not need too much water; keep it in a semi-dry state to help the root system recover.

2. Temperature: Gemstone plants prefer a warm, moist, and semi-shaded growing environment. The suitable growing temperature is 20-30°C, and the overwintering temperature is 15°C. In winter, if the nighttime temperature is not lower than 5°C and the daytime temperature is above 15°C, the plant can continue to grow, and it can be watered normally and fertilized appropriately. If watering is controlled to make the plant go dormant, it can also tolerate a low temperature of 0°C.

3. Light: During high summer temperatures and cold winter temperatures, gemstone plants are in a dormant state. The main growing period is in the cooler spring and autumn seasons. During the growing period, full sunlight is required. If there is insufficient light, the plant shape will become loose and not compact, affecting its ornamental value. Plants grown in sufficient light have thick, plump leaves, a compact plant shape, and beautiful leaf color.

4. Watering: For watering gemstone plants, follow the principle of “do not water until dry, and water thoroughly when watering.” Avoid long-term water accumulation to prevent root rot, but do not let them become too dry either, otherwise although the plant will not die, it will grow slowly, the leaf color will be dull, and it will lack vitality. During high summer temperatures, leaf water evaporation is high and water demand is greater. If water is lacking, the leaves are very likely to wilt, so it is necessary to frequently spray water on the leaf surface while keeping the environment moist, but water accumulation in the pot must be avoided, otherwise it will cause root rot.
