Morning glory is also known as trumpet flower, jinjiaolazi, large morning glory, qinniangzi, and so on. It is an annual climbing herbaceous flower of the genus Ipomoea in the Convolvulaceae family. Its trailing stems are slender, and the whole plant is mostly densely covered with short bristles. Its corolla is trumpet-shaped, and its flower colors are bright and beautiful. Besides being cultivated for ornamental purposes, its seeds are a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine. Now let us take a look together at when morning glories bloom!

When do morning glories bloom?

The blooming period of morning glory is from June to October. It usually begins to bloom slowly at around 4 to 5 o'clock in the early morning, and by about noon the flowers have withered. This is because morning glory flowers are both large and thin, and the flowers contain abundant water. When sunlight shines on them, the water in the flowers evaporates completely within a relatively short time. In a cool place, morning glories wilt more slowly, and sometimes the flowers are even still open in the afternoon.

What is the flower language of morning glory?

Everlasting love. Morning glory has a folk name, “qinniangzi”, and from the name alone you can tell that it is a very diligent flower. Whenever the rooster has just crowed for the first time, when the hour hand is still pointing around the “four”, on the morning glory branches winding around fences and trellises, trumpet-like morning glory flowers will open one after another. These morning glories let people in the dawn, while breathing the fresh air, also fully enjoy the fresh flowers dotted among the green leaves. It truly has a special charm, no wonder it is so likable.

Why do morning glories change color?

Morning glories often change color. Purple morning glories sometimes turn blue, and sometimes turn red. The color change is caused by a gene that leads to a change in the pH of the cell vacuole. According to a report in the British journal Nature, the color of morning glory flowers is not only related to the pigments and metal ions contained in the cells, but is also affected by the pH of the liquid in the cell vacuole. The vacuole is a vesicular structure in the cytoplasm, wrapped by the vacuolar membrane, containing watery cell sap, which contains components such as salts and sugars. Scientists selected a kind of morning glory that remains purple after blooming and compared it with blue morning glory. The results showed that after the purple flowers bloom, their vacuolar pH remains neutral, while the vacuoles of blue flowers become alkaline, causing the flower color to change from purple to blue, just as litmus paper turns blue when it encounters an alkaline solution.
