What are the propagation methods for variegated Schefflera (umbrella tree)?
1. Ordinary cutting method
Cuttings are generally taken in spring. First cut a one-year-old branch from the top of the plant, about eight to ten cm in length, then remove the lower leaves to prevent water loss through transpiration. Insert it into a bed of river sand, keep the temperature at around 25°C, and maintain a humid environment; roots will form in about four to six weeks.
2. Sowing method
The best time for this method is spring. The soil chosen should be moist. After placing the seeds in, cover them with a thin layer of soil. At a temperature of 20 to 25°C, seedlings emerge in about two to three weeks. When the seedlings reach a height of five to seven cm, transplant them once, and plant them in their permanent position the following year.
3. Full-light mist cutting method
First, lay ceramic tile and sterilized river sand in sequence into the cutting bed. Then select an eight cm long soft shoot grown in the current year, remove the lower leaves, and dip the base in rooting powder for about twenty minutes. Next, it is best to insert the branches into the bed sand in the afternoon. After insertion, mist for the first two weeks every day from eight to seventeen o'clock at an interval of three minutes; in the third and fourth weeks, change the interval to seven or eight minutes; after the fifth week, the interval should be about ten minutes. Once the rooted seedlings have grown strong, divide and plant them.
4. Air layering method
From late April to June, select a two-year-old branch, girdle and peel the bark in a ring about one cm wide and deep enough to reveal the green cambium, wrap the wound with moist moss or rotted manure, and finally bind the upper and lower ends with a plastic bag. Roots form in about forty days. This method has a relatively high survival rate and is also helpful for shaping and pruning the plant in the future.
