Propagation Methods for the Dragon's Whisker Orchid

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
The Dragon's Whisker Orchid, also known as the Large-Flowered Bulbophyllum, is a highly ornamental flowering plant. It closely resembles the Dragon's Blood Tree, and many people confuse the two plants. In fact, they can easily be told apart by their names: one is a tree and the other is an orchid, and there is a huge difference in plant height. Back to the point, today I want to tell you about the propagation methods for the Dragon's Whisker Orchid. Let's take a look.

1. Timing

Spring and autumn.

2. Method

This plant is generally propagated by cuttings. Select healthy, disease-free branches, cut them off, and insert them directly into sandy soil, leaving a certain spacing between each plant.

3. Points to Note

(1) Before taking cuttings, soak the sandy soil together with the pot in water, and wait until no water droplets are falling from the drainage holes at the bottom before inserting the cuttings.

(2) After inserting the cuttings, place it in a semi-shaded spot. At this time, be sure not to place it in direct sunlight.

(3) Keep the potting soil moist, and the air should also have a certain degree of humidity. If you cannot keep the environment humid, you can wrap it in plastic film. During the day, open the film and mist the surface of the sandy soil to let it breathe, then wrap it up again at night.

(4) Keep the temperature at around 25°C, and after about 20 days new roots and shoots will grow. Once the new roots or shoots have grown for a while, it can be transplanted.

4. Care After Planting Out

When applying fertilizer, be sure not to let the roots and leaves come into contact with the fertilizer.

Do not let the soil become too dry, but do not let water accumulate either. Before watering, it is best to leave the water in the sun for a while first.

After planting out, give it appropriate sunlight, otherwise it will grow poorly; in particular, its leaves will become as thin and brittle as paper. Appropriate sun exposure will make it look more vibrant.
