What are the cultivation methods and precautions for the variegated Schefflera (umbrella tree)?
1. The habits of this plant
(1) First, it likes a warm climate, and the suitable temperature for its growth is in the range of 20 to 30 degrees. In winter, it must not go below 5°C, and at the lowest it should not go below 0°C, otherwise the plant will suffer cold damage and drop its leaves.
(2) In addition, it likes a humid environment and is especially afraid of dryness. However, you cannot water it without restraint either, because it is equally afraid of waterlogging.
(3) Also, it has a relatively strong adaptability to light: full sun, half sun, and partial shade are all fine, but its leaf color differs under different conditions. When the light is strong, its color is light green; when the light is weak, its leaves are dark green.
(4) It also has some requirements for the soil, which we will mention later.
2. Specific methods
(1) Temperature: If you are in a more southern region, then basically you do not need to pay much attention. If you are in a place at a relatively high latitude, then you need to be careful in winter; it is best not to let it go below 5°C, to ensure it overwinters safely.
(2) Water: When it is growing relatively fast, you can water it a bit more. When the air is relatively dry, you can increase humidity by spraying water. However, there must not be too much water either, otherwise the roots will rot.
(3) Light: We have already mentioned its characteristics above, so you can adjust the degree of light according to your own preference.
(4) Soil: Being nutrient-rich, loose, and well-draining are the basics. We can mix peat soil, leaf mold, and coarse sand together to grow it.
3. Precautions
When watering, be very careful not to let it be too dry one moment and too wet the next.
