The Sapphireberry (Symplocos paniculata), also known as huimu, suizishu, wuyu, zimuzi, zhaichai and so on, is a deciduous shrub or small tree of the genus Symplocos in the family Symplocaceae. It is widely distributed in northeastern China and the areas south of the Yellow River, and is especially common in the provinces and regions south of the Yangtze River basin. It has the advantages of tolerating drought and barren soil, a well-developed root system, strong sprouting ability and easy propagation. Now let us take a look at the cultivation techniques for the Sapphireberry!

Growth Habits of the Sapphireberry

The Sapphireberry grows on hillsides, roadsides, open woodlands or dense forests at an altitude of 760-2500 m. It prefers a warm, humid climate and deep, fertile sandy loam, and likes sunlight while also tolerating slight shade. It is a deep-rooted tree species with strong adaptability, cold resistance, drought tolerance and tolerance of barren soil, and grows best along the banks of rivers and streams and at the edges of village fields. It is more abundant in the south, and this species is suitable in both the north and the south. Its white flowers and blue fruits make it excellent as a flowering hedge or for forest edges and roadsides.

Seed Collection of the Sapphireberry

Select mature Sapphireberry trees as mother trees for seed collection. The seed collection time is from late September to early October, and it is important not to pick the seeds prematurely while still green. After collection, the fruits need to be piled and fermented for 3-5 days. Once the fruit skins are soft and ripe, put them into cloth bags and rub and wash them repeatedly to remove the fruit skins and impurities and obtain the seeds. The thousand-grain mass of the seeds is about 140 grams, and the moisture content should be maintained at about 30%. They must not be allowed to lose water, and should not be sun-dried or stored dry.

Seed Treatment of the Sapphireberry

Sapphireberry seeds should absorb enough water before sowing or treatment. The seeds have good water permeability; after soaking for 24 hours, the water absorption of the seeds can reach 30-40%. For forced dormancy, acid scarification can be used. Generally, concentrated sulfuric acid with a specific gravity of 1.84 is used for acid scarification for 5.5 hours, after which the seeds are placed under running water and rinsed for 18 hours. This reduces the constraint of the seed shell on the embryo and increases the permeability of the seed coat. Treatment with gibberellin can regulate and break the physiological dormancy of the seeds.
