Golden Sedum is a natural variety of Sedum hispanicum, a perennial herbaceous plant in the genus Sedum of the family Crassulaceae. It is distributed from southern Europe to Central Asia, and has also naturalized in the United States and Japan. It is cultivated in many places in China, and can be grown in small pots, accenting sunny courtyards, balconies, windowsills and other spots. Natural and elegant, verdant and lush, it brings people green enjoyment. Now let us take a look at the cultivation methods for Golden Sedum!

The Cultivation Value of Golden Sedum

Golden Sedum is a delicate, elegant small succulent full of wild charm. Because of its good drought tolerance, it can grow in places with little soil, and is especially suitable for accenting rock bonsai or for planting directly on rocks. Its layering is rich, resembling either a miniature coniferous forest seen from afar, or streams of green cascading between peaks and gullies, displaying different charms and giving people a feeling of abundant vitality. It can also be used as a surface accent plant for stump bonsai; a pot full of emerald green is all the more elegant and pleasant.

Propagation Methods for Golden Sedum

Golden Sedum is basically propagated by division: separate the clustered plants and plant them individually. You can also select healthy, thick stems in spring or autumn, cut them off and place them directly on the surface of breathable soil without watering. After 3 to 5 days the wounds will basically heal, and at this point the potting soil can be misted. During propagation the soil surface should be slightly moist, which is what favors rooting. After rooting, water heavily, and it will slowly enter a normal growth state. After roots appear, keep the soil surface slightly moist, and it will still grow fairly quickly.

Cultivation Methods for Golden Sedum

1. Watering: During the growing season of Golden Sedum, keep the potting soil moist, avoid waterlogging, and do not let it be rained on for long periods. All of this is to prevent the plant from rotting. You can water according to the principle of “do not water until dry, and water thoroughly when you do.” When the temperature is below 5 degrees or above 30 degrees, pay attention to controlling water to prevent waterlogging in the potting soil from causing root rot. In winter it can be placed in a spot with ample light, with watering controlled, as long as the soil does not freeze.

2. Pruning: When Golden Sedum shows bare stems at the bottom due to fallen leaves, you can cut it shorter. The fleshy stems are rather brittle and break easily, so be careful when repotting to avoid breaking the longer branches, which would affect the ornamental effect. It will then branch again, and the cut stems can be used for re-propagation.

3. Dividing pots: Golden Sedum grows quickly, so when growth becomes too dense it should be divided into separate pots to maintain a beautiful plant shape. The medium can be sandy loam or ordinary potting soil. It tolerates poor soil, so fertilization is not necessary. With long-term growth, leaves at the base will fall off and leave the stems bare.

4. Light: During the growing season, place Golden Sedum in a spot with ample sunlight for care. Even in the hot summer season it does not need shading. Under sufficient light the plant shape will be more compact and beautiful. Although it can also grow in partial shade, the plant shape will be loose, which affects its ornamental value. Most importantly, Golden Sedum with insufficient light will become leggy, with the distance between leaves stretched longer, looking sparse and ugly, and the plant will grow weakly, making it very prone to black rot and other diseases, causing the entire pot of plants to rot and be completely wiped out.

Precautions for Golden Sedum

1. Loose soil: Golden Sedum does not have high soil requirements; sandy loam or ordinary potting soil will both do, and it is fairly tolerant of poor soil. Of course, peat can also be used. For routine watering, let the water dry out as much as possible and then water thoroughly; do not let water accumulate. Slightly moist soil will make it grow relatively quickly, but be careful about leggy growth. That said, beginners in growing flowers may understand everything but always fall a little short in practice. You should know that if the soil is not chosen well, Golden Sedum will die very quickly.

2. No cold drafts: Golden Sedum likes a warm environment and can grow well between 5 and 30 degrees Celsius, but in winter it is best not to place it by a window. Even closed windows let in drafts at times, and if you carelessly open the window, Golden Sedum will suffer!

3. Appropriate shading: When the summer temperature rises above 35 degrees, it should be shaded appropriately, with ventilation strengthened and watering restrained. When the winter temperature is below 5 degrees Celsius, watering should be controlled. If it drops even lower, consider moving it indoors to overwinter, choosing a sunny indoor spot as much as possible.
