How to grow Drosanthemum floribundum? A detailed guide to the latest cultivation methods
Drosanthemum floribundum is a succulent plant of the family Aizoaceae, order Caryophyllales, class Dicotyledoneae, division Angiospermae. Its leaves are fleshy and arranged in a shape resembling rabbit ears, giving it ornamental value. It is a relatively popular variety among succulents and is mainly distributed in southern Africa, Oceania and the central Pacific region and other tropical arid regions. Let us take a look below at the cultivation methods for Drosanthemum floribundum!
Choosing a flower pot
When choosing a sowing pot for Drosanthemum floribundum, it is best to choose a clay pot with good breathability rather than a ceramic flower pot. This is because only when the flower pot is breathable does the potting soil dry out easily, which is good for seed germination. If you cannot find a clay pot, you can also choose a pottery pot. After the sowing pot is ready, you need to put soil into it. The thickness of the soil placed in the pot should be controlled at around eight to ten cm, and a margin of two to three cm should be left.
Soil preparation
The soil used for sowing Drosanthemum floribundum should be loose, breathable and have good water retention. It is best to use a mixed soil. The mixed soil can be composed of nutrient soil, coal ash, sand, plant ash and perlite in a ratio of 4:4:2:1:1. Alternatively, nutrient soil, vermiculite and perlite can be mixed in a ratio of 4:6:1.
Sowing method
Before sowing Drosanthemum floribundum, first evenly spread a layer of sand on the surface of the soil, then moisten the sand with a spray bottle, and then evenly scatter the seeds on the sand. Because the seeds of Drosanthemum floribundum are very small, you can also first mix the seeds evenly with fine sand before sowing. To improve the germination rate, the seeds need to be sown somewhat densely, and no soil needs to be covered after sowing.
Seedling stage management
After the seeds of Drosanthemum floribundum germinate, because the seedlings are relatively fragile, they must be carefully managed. During the germination period and even the seedling stage of Drosanthemum floribundum, excessive moisture should be strictly avoided to prevent the plants from rotting. Watering should be based on whether the soil is dry, and you must never water directly, to prevent drowning the plants. Instead, use the immersion irrigation method, allowing water to slowly penetrate into the soil and gradually moisten the potting soil through the small holes at the bottom of the pot. Sometimes the roots of small Drosanthemum floribundum seedlings grow to the surface of the soil, and then the seedling roots need to be gently buried back into the soil.
Sunlight management
Drosanthemum floribundum likes plenty of sunlight but cannot be exposed to harsh sun, so in summer attention should be paid to shading the seedlings. When the weather is very hot, you can place a water tray under the bottom of the flower pot and add water to keep the bottom of the pot moist. In the cold winter, move Drosanthemum floribundum to a corner where it can receive sunlight and keep the potting soil slightly moist.
Fertilizer management
Drosanthemum floribundum seeds can be fertilized one to two months after germination. Note that the purchased fertilizer should be diluted as much as possible, and fertilization should still be done by the immersion irrigation method. If you have no experience with fertilizing, you can also skip fertilizing at first. After many small Drosanthemum floribundum seedlings have grown, in order to let the seedlings absorb enough nutrients for growth, they should be divided into separate pots in a timely manner. The seedlings need to be watered only one week after being divided into pots.
