The pink trumpet tree (Tabebuia rosea) is a deciduous tree of the genus Tabebuia in the family Bignoniaceae, native to subtropical America, Mexico and Argentina. It has now been widely introduced and cultivated in China, often used as an excellent street tree, and can also be planted in courtyards, campuses, residential areas, etc. It is suitable for cultivation along roadsides and watersides in parks, green spaces, etc. Now let us take a look at the cultivation techniques for the pink trumpet tree!

Growth Habits

The pink trumpet tree is native to subtropical regions and prefers high temperatures. Its suitable growth temperature is 20-30°C, and in winter it needs a warm, wind-sheltered place to overwinter. In the northern part of South China, winter temperatures are low and there is abundant rain and humidity, so attention must be paid to cold damage. The best cultivation soil is sandy loam rich in organic matter. Drainage and sunlight must be good.

Propagation Methods

The pink trumpet tree can be propagated by seeds, cuttings and layering. Because its seeds germinate easily, sowing is mainly used in production. Seeds should be sown immediately after collection. From sowing and flowering to fruiting takes 2-3 years. Plants propagated by cuttings, layering and other methods can bloom earlier, but their root systems are not well developed and the main trunk is not obvious.

Cultivation Techniques

The pink trumpet tree prefers high temperatures, and in South China it grows better when cultivated in the central and southern regions. The cultivation site should be on high ground with sufficient sunlight. Spring to summer is the peak growth period. Apply a small amount of fertilizer once every 1-2 months, fertilize 2-3 times per year, and supply sufficient water. In mature plants, flower bud differentiation occurs from late autumn to spring, and pruning should be avoided so as not to affect flowering. After the flowering period ends, prune and shape the branches to encourage lateral branches to grow and produce more flowers.

Pest and Disease Control

When new leaves first sprout each spring, the pink trumpet tree is easily attacked by pests and diseases. For leaf spot disease, 50% carbendazim powder at 600 times dilution and 70% thiophanate-methyl powder at 800 times dilution can be sprayed alternately. For pest damage, 1000 times dilution of Wanling powder and 1000 times dilution of Lorsban emulsifiable concentrate can be sprayed alternately, with spraying once every 7-10 days for 3-4 consecutive times, giving good control results.
