How to grow Chinese trumpet creeper? A detailed guide to the latest cultivation methods
Chinese trumpet creeper (Campsis grandiflora) is one of the famous garden flowers, also known as wuzhualong, shangshulong, tengluohua, etc. It is a climbing vine of the genus Campsis in the family Bignoniaceae, with funnel-shaped flowers in bright red or golden yellow, vivid in color and with a long flowering period. Through training it can be made into a hanging bonsai, or used to decorate windowsills and drying balconies, etc. Now let us take a look at the cultivation methods for Chinese trumpet creeper!
Growth habits of Chinese trumpet creeper
Chinese trumpet creeper is produced in various places along the Yangtze River basin as well as in Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Shaanxi and other places in China, and is cultivated in Taiwan, China, Japan, Vietnam, India and West Pakistan. It likes light and warmth, and seedlings have poor cold resistance. If there is insufficient light, although it can still grow, the branches become thin and long. It requires fertile, deep, well-drained sandy soil.
Propagation methods of Chinese trumpet creeper
1. Sowing: After the seeds of Chinese trumpet creeper mature in October, pick the seed pods, harvest and dry them in the sun, take out the seeds, remove debris, dry them in the shade and store them dry, then sow in the following spring. Before sowing, the seeds can be soaked in clean water for 2 to 3 days to promote germination.
2. Cuttage: Cuttings can be done in spring and summer, selecting thicker one-year-old branches. Cut them into cuttings 10-15 cm long, remove the leaves, then insert them in the cutting bed at a row spacing of 15-20 cm and a plant spacing of 5 cm, inserting 2/3 of the cutting into the soil, then press firm and water.
3. Layering: In July, pull the thick vines down to the ground, cover them in sections with soil mounds, leaving the buds exposed, and keep the soil moist. Roots will form in about 50 days, and after rooting, cut them off and transplant. In the south, layering can also be done in spring.
4. Root division: Root division propagation is best done in early spring, that is, dig out the small seedlings growing from root buds near the mother plant and plant them.
Cultivation methods of Chinese trumpet creeper
1. Fertilizing: Chinese trumpet creeper likes fertilizer and moisture. After sprouting in spring, water and fertilizer management should be strengthened. Generally, apply liquid fertilizer 1-2 times a month.
2. Watering: During the flowering period, a certain temperature should be maintained. The potting soil should not be too dry, but it should not be too wet either.
3. Pruning: For plants grown on trellises, in order to promote vigorous growth and abundant flowering, before sprouting in early spring, cut off weak, winter-killed and crowded branches so as to improve ventilation and light penetration, which is beneficial to growth and flowering.
4. Pests and diseases: Chinese trumpet creeper has relatively few pests and diseases, but in dry spring and autumn seasons, it is easily harmed by aphids, and timely prevention and control should be noted.
