The bamboo palm (Rhapis excelsa) has a compact and elegant plant form, upright clumps, delicate leaf shapes, and glossy green leaves. It combines the tropical charm with the elegance of bamboo, making it an important indoor foliage plant. It is very shade-tolerant, suitable both for small and medium potted plants for general household indoor display, and for large pots used for indoor arrangement in large buildings. Now let us take a look at what to do when the leaves of bamboo palm turn yellow!

Overwatering

[Cause] The young leaves of bamboo palm turn dull yellow and lose their luster, while the old leaves show no obvious change, the stems are thin and yellow-green, and the new shoots shrivel and stop growing, indicating overwatering.

[Solution] Take the plant out of the pot, place it in a ventilated and shaded place to let the soil ball dry naturally, then put it back into the pot.

Insufficient watering

[Cause] The yellowing caused by lack of water in bamboo palm differs from that caused by too much water. The yellowing from water shortage shows withered and dried leaf tips or edges, and the old leaves turn yellow and fall off from bottom to top, but the new leaves grow relatively normally.

[Solution] Just pay attention to watering thoroughly and adequately.

Excessive light

[Cause] Strong direct sunlight on some shade-loving flowers (such as spider plant, hosta, etc.) easily causes the leaf tips and leaf edges to wither, and yellow spots appear on the sun-facing part of the leaves.

[Solution] Just move it to a shaded place.

Lack of sunlight

[Cause] When bamboo palm is placed in a shaded environment for a long time, the leaves cannot get enough sunlight and cannot form chlorophyll, so the whole plant's leaves turn yellow and then fall off.

[Solution] Supplementing light can avoid this problem.

Overfertilizing

[Cause] Yellowing of the plant caused by too much fertilizer or too high a concentration in bamboo palm shows as dry brown tips on the new leaves. Generally, the leaf surface is thick and lacks luster, and is uneven and not smooth, while the old leaves turn scorched yellow and fall off.

[Solution] Stop fertilizing immediately; in severe cases, use a large amount of water to wash out part of the fertilizer.

Insufficient fertilizing

[Cause] Yellowing of the leaves caused by insufficient fertilizing in bamboo palm shows as the young leaves becoming lighter in color, yellow or pale green, while the old leaves remain relatively normal or gradually turn from green to yellow.

[Solution] Check the potting soil. If there is dry caking, replace the soil. Usually apply light fertilizer frequently and water with some alum water at the right time (fertilizer mainly based on nitrogen fertilizer should be applied).
