The poison bulb is also known as Wenzhu Lan, Luoqun Dai, Wenlan Shu, and so on. Its flowers and foliage are both beautiful, giving it high ornamental value. It can be used as a decorative accent for green spaces in scenic gardens, school and institutional grounds, and lawns in residential communities, as well as a flowering plant for courtyard decoration. It can also serve as a hedge around buildings, while potted plants can be placed in solemn conference halls, luxurious hotels, banquet hall entrances, and so on. Now let us take a look at how to cultivate the poison bulb!

Growth Habits of the Poison Bulb

The poison bulb is native to Indonesia, Sumatra, and elsewhere. It is cultivated in the tropical and subtropical provinces of southern China, but is especially widely grown in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province. It likes a warm, humid environment with ample light and fertile sandy loam. It is not cold-tolerant but tolerates saline-alkaline soil. During the seedling stage, however, it should be protected from strong direct sunlight. The suitable growing temperature is 15-20°C. During the winter bulb dormancy period, the suitable storage temperature is around 8°C.

Propagation Methods for the Poison Bulb

1. Division: The poison bulb can be divided in spring or autumn, preferably in spring when repotting. Tip the mother plant out of the pot, peel off the surrounding bulbs, and plant them separately.

2. Sowing: Sowing the poison bulb is best done in March to April. Sow in points in a shallow pot, cover with about 2 cm of soil, water thoroughly, and keep at 16-22°C with moderate moisture, not too wet. Germination occurs in about 2 weeks.

Cultivation Methods for the Poison Bulb

1. Soil: The poison bulb is not demanding about soil and tolerates saline-alkaline conditions. It grows better in soil rich in humus that is loose, fertile, and well-drained.

2. Watering: The poison bulb needs plenty of water during the growing season. Keep the soil moist frequently, but do not let it become waterlogged. Reduce watering after autumn.

3. Sunlight: To keep the poison bulb's leaves green, attractive, and neat without affecting light exposure, provide appropriate shade during the intense heat of midsummer.

4. Temperature: The poison bulb likes warmth and is not cold-tolerant. The suitable growing temperature is 15-20°C. In winter it needs to overwinter indoors at no less than 5°C.

5. Fertilizing: The poison bulb likes fertilizer. Apply manure fertilizer 2-3 times per month, and add phosphorus fertilizer 2 more times before and after flowering, which helps produce more flowers and prolongs the flowering period.

6. Pruning: After the poison bulb flowers, if seeds are not wanted, cut off the flower stalk, and remove old yellow leaves at the same time.

Precautions for the Poison Bulb

1. In the hot summer, the poison bulb fears most the scorching sun. When this season arrives, move the plant to a shady spot or a north-facing balcony for care, keep the ground sufficiently moist at all times, and make the environment dry, moist, and cool.

2. The poison bulb likes fertilizer, so during cultivation take care to fertilize frequently. During the growing period, fertilize frequently with dilute fertilizer. In spring, mainly use nitrogen fertilizer; at the bud stage, switch to phosphorus and potassium fertilizer; in autumn, switch again to cake fertilizer, about once every two weeks in a cycle.

3. During the growing period of the poison bulb, pay attention to watering. The watering method differs across spring, summer, autumn, and winter. In spring, water almost once every day; in summer, water once every evening; from the beginning of autumn, reduce watering; in winter, strictly control it, about once every two weeks.

4. The poison bulb needs attention to warmth. In northern regions this is around October, while in southern regions it is relatively later. By November, the plant needs to be moved indoors, placed in a sunny spot, and kept at around 10°C for overwintering.
