The Yuanbao tree is also known as the Chinese wingnut, hemp willow, centipede willow, etc. It is an evergreen broadleaf tree of the genus Yuanbao tree in the walnut family, with a broad crown, dense branches and leaves, fast growth, and a well-developed root system. It has high ornamental value. Young plants are suitable for small potted cultivation and indoor viewing. After reaching maturity, it can be used as an ornamental garden plant. In the north, it is often moved to a large pot for indoor cultivation. Now let us take a look at the cultivation methods and precautions for the Yuanbao tree!

Growth Habits of the Yuanbao Tree

The Yuanbao tree is distributed south of the Yellow River basin, from eastern Shandong in the east, to Hubei and Sichuan in the west, and to Guangdong in the south. It is an important afforestation tree species in plain lake areas, low mountain valleys, and along riverbanks, and is also an urban greening tree species. It likes light, is relatively cold-tolerant, likes fertile soil, tolerates waterlogging, and mostly grows by the water. Young trees grow quickly, with the fast-growing period lasting until about 15 years, after which growth gradually slows. It bears fruit relatively early and declines at 40-60 years. It has a deep root system, but a relatively short lifespan.

Propagation Methods of the Yuanbao Tree

The Yuanbao tree is commonly propagated by seeds. After the fruit matures, collect it, dry it in the sun, remove impurities, and store it dry until sowing in November. For spring sowing, it is best to first soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours in January, then mix with twice the amount of sand and pile them in a shady place for low-temperature treatment. By mid-February, move the seeds to a sunny place to raise the temperature and promote germination, turning them over frequently and keeping them moist. By late March or early April, they can be sown.

Cultivation Methods of the Yuanbao Tree

1. Soil: The Yuanbao tree is best grown in fertile, humus-rich sandy loam mixed with rotted wood shavings and small pieces of pine bark, with crushed stone placed at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.

2. Watering: Water the Yuanbao tree by the principle of “wet and dry alternately,” keeping the potting soil moist regularly, but there must be no standing water. In winter, keep the potting soil slightly dry and do not water until it is dry, to prevent root rot from excess water.

3. Light: Young Yuanbao trees are shade-tolerant, with about 50-70% sunlight. Mature plants need sufficient sunlight and require medium-intensity scattered light. They can tolerate shade, but in summer avoid direct exposure to strong sunlight.

4. Temperature: The Yuanbao tree prefers high temperatures, and the most suitable growth temperature is 22-30°C.

5. Fertilization: The Yuanbao tree likes fertilizer; apply alum fertilizer water once a month.

6. Pests and diseases: The Yuanbao tree is sometimes harmed by scale insects. In the early spring germination period, 0.3-0.5% Baume degree solution can be used.

7. Pruning: During the growth of the Yuanbao tree, the plant needs to be pinched back to maintain a perfect plant shape. After the flowering period ends, prune promptly, pull out and burn the damaged stems and leaves, and reduce the source of infection.

Precautions for Growing the Yuanbao Tree

1. A newly purchased Yuanbao tree or one that has just been repotted often drops leaves. If it lacks sunlight, supplement light appropriately. Excessive fertilizer or too frequent watering can also cause this situation. It should not be planted too densely. Pay attention to cleanliness and hygiene. After the flowering period ends, promptly pull out and burn the damaged stems and leaves to reduce the source of infection.

2. There are particular requirements for watering the Yuanbao tree. Do not water it directly with tap water, because tap water contains disinfecting substances such as chlorine. If using tap water, it is best to let it sit in the sun for a day before use. In northern summers, the air is dry, so spray water on the leaves frequently. The plant should be sprayed with water regularly, but avoid standing water in the pot, so as to prevent the cotyledons from rotting.

3. During the high-temperature summer season or when the autumn air is relatively dry, including during the winter when it is kept indoors, the Yuanbao tree should be sprayed frequently on the leaves and surrounding environment to create a relatively humid local micro-environment and promote its robust growth.

4. After autumn begins, watering should be controlled. In winter, spray more water and water less. If there is standing water in the potting soil, it can easily cause the plant to turn yellow, and the lower leaves will yellow and fall off. In severe cases, it can cause root rot and death of the plant. Special attention should be paid during the plum rain season.
