Wisteria has been cultivated as a garden trellis plant in China since ancient times. It blooms before its leaves emerge, with full hanging clusters of purple blossoms interspersed with sparse young leaves, very graceful. It is generally used on garden trellises; in spring the purple flowers are lush and full of charm. It is suitable for planting beside lakes, ponds, rockeries, stone archways and other such places, with a unique style, and is also often used for bonsai. Now let us take a look together at how to grow wisteria!

Wisteria's growth habits

Wisteria is a plant of the warm temperate and temperate zones. It adapts strongly to climate and soil, is relatively cold-tolerant, can withstand waterlogging and poor, thin soil, likes light, and is relatively shade-tolerant. It is most suitable for cultivation in places with deep soil layers, good drainage, and sun facing away from wind. The main root is deep, the lateral roots are shallow, and it does not tolerate transplanting. It grows relatively fast and has a very long lifespan. It has strong twining ability and has a strangling effect on other plants. In Guangdong, wisteria can adapt to the temperatures of all four seasons. When overwintering, it should be placed in a low-temperature spot around 0°C, keeping the potting soil slightly moist so the plant can fully enter dormancy.

Wisteria's propagation methods

1. Cuttings: Hardwood cuttings are generally used. In mid-to-late March, before the branches sprout, select robust 1-2 year old branches, cut them into cuttings about 15 cm long, and insert them into a prepared seedbed, with the insertion depth at 2/3 of the cutting length. After inserting, spray water, strengthen care, and keep the seedbed moist. The survival rate is very high. In the same year the plant height can reach 20-50 cm, and after two years it can leave the nursery.

2. Sowing: Wisteria sowing propagation is carried out in March. Seeds are harvested in November, the pod skins removed, sun-dried, bagged and stored. Before sowing, soak the seeds in hot water. When the boiled water temperature drops to around 30°C, remove the seeds and rinse them briefly in cold water, then keep them moist and pile them for a day and a night before sowing. Alternatively, store the seeds in wet sand and soak them in clean water for 1-2 days before sowing.

Wisteria's cultivation methods

1. Soil: Wisteria tolerates poor soil, but fertile soil is more favorable for growth. It also adapts strongly to soil pH. You should choose a high, dry spot with deep soil layers, fertile soil and good drainage.

2. Light: Wisteria likes sunlight and tolerates shade somewhat. To make it grow well, a trellis is generally set up for cultivation, but there are also relatively shorter varieties that can be used as potted plants or made into bonsai.

3. Temperature: Wisteria has strong adaptability. It can withstand summer heat and also cold. It is cultivated from south to north in China, so in Guangdong it can adapt to wisteria's growth needs in all four seasons.

4. Watering: Wisteria's main root is very deep, so it has relatively strong drought tolerance, but it likes moist soil. However, the roots must not be left soaking in water, otherwise root rot will occur.

5. Fertilizing: Applying compound fertilizer 2-3 times a year basically meets wisteria's needs. Before sprouting, nitrogen fertilizer, superphosphate, etc. can be applied. During the growth period, topdress 2-3 times with decomposed human manure and urine.

6. Pruning: Wisteria should preferably be pruned during the dormant period. When pruning, you can make the branches evenly distributed by removing dense growth and keeping sparse growth and by manual training. Reasonable pruning should also be carried out according to its growth habits.
