The ball cactus is a very easy plant to grow. Its native habitat is mostly desert regions, and it prefers hot, dry climates. It is naturally robust, and even someone who has never grown a plant before can easily keep a ball cactus alive. Such an indomitable and tenacious ball cactus carries many meanings once it blooms. Below, let us take a look together at what it means when a ball cactus blooms!

What does it mean when a ball cactus blooms?

The symbolism of a ball cactus blooming is very good. It represents the tenacity of life and the good fortune of life, and it also represents auspiciousness and good wishes. The symbolism of a ball cactus blooming differs from place to place. Some say that a ball cactus blooming represents forgiveness for mistakes, probably because the chance of a ball cactus blooming is very small and the blooming time is also very brief. It is precisely because the ball cactus flower lasts such a short time that people cherish the period when the ball cactus blooms even more.

When does the ball cactus bloom?

The ball cactus generally blooms around May, and how long the bloom lasts varies by variety. Some, such as the grass ball cactus, may last only a few hours to one day, while others such as Yuweng and Feihuayu can stay open for about two to three days. Under normal circumstances, to see a ball cactus bloom you need to cultivate it for at least 3~4 years and the ball diameter must reach at least 3~4 cm. However, depending on the variety, the ease of blooming also differs. Generally, those in the genus Gymnocalycium bloom more easily, such as Feihuayu, while the golden barrel cactus is very hard to see bloom; it is said you have to wait one or two decades for it to flower.

How can a ball cactus be made to bloom?

1. Soil: The soil used for planting ball cacti is best kept somewhat loose and also nutrient-rich. You can buy some nutrient soil specially made for planting cacti and succulents. This helps the plant absorb water and air, and can also encourage it to bloom sooner.

2. Light: The ball cactus likes ample sunlight and ultraviolet rays. In seasons with little rain, try to place it outdoors, so it can have better light and ventilation conditions. This is very helpful for the plant's vigorous growth and can also encourage it to bloom sooner.

3. Temperature: The optimal growing temperature for the ball cactus is 20~30°C, and it is best if the temperature difference between day and night is somewhat large, as this benefits its growth. Be careful not to let it stay in a hot, stuffy environment all summer, and in winter the temperature should not be lower than 5°C.

4. Water: From April to June, water the ball cactus once every 1 to 2 days. In July and August, when the temperature exceeds 38°C, increase ventilation and restrain watering. In winter, if the room temperature is above 15°C, you can water normally; if the room temperature is 5~10°C, water once every half month; if it is below 5°C, do not water.

5. Fertilizer: Proper fertilizing during the ball cactus's growing season can promote blooming. Do not fertilize when the temperature is above 32°C or below 20°C. For fertilizer, choose things such as chicken manure, bone meal, or cake fertilizer. After thorough decomposition, dilute with water and pour it into the pot.
