Gardenia is an important ornamental garden plant, also known as zhizi, huangzhizi, etc. It is an evergreen shrub of the genus Gardenia in the family Rubiaceae, with luxuriant branches and leaves, evergreen foliage, and a rich floral fragrance. Besides being ornamental, its flowers, fruits, leaves, and roots can be used as medicine, with effects such as clearing fire and relieving irritability, clearing heat and promoting urination, and cooling blood and removing toxins. Let us take a look below at what to do when gardenia leaves wilt!

What growing conditions does gardenia need?

1. Light: Gardenia likes light and can also tolerate shade. Under shaded conditions, the leaves are dark green but flowering is somewhat poorer.

2. Temperature: Gardenia likes a warm and humid climate, tolerates heat and also slightly tolerates cold (-3°C).

3. Soil: Gardenia likes fertile, well-drained, acidic light clay loam, and also tolerates drought and poor soil, but the plant is prone to aging.

4. Water: Gardenia likes moist soil and relatively high air humidity. During the growing season, watering should be appropriately increased.

What to do when gardenia leaves wilt?

1. Soil cause: If gardenia leaves wilt due to soil, the nutrient soil should be replaced with acidic soil suitable for its growth, and it should be rich in humus.

2. Light problem: Gardenia likes light but cannot be exposed to strong sunlight. Exposure to sunlight can cause leaves to wilt and turn yellow. In summer, it should be placed in a semi-shaded place to avoid strong light.

3. Improper watering: Gardenia has relatively high water requirements and needs sufficient moisture. In summer afternoons, more watering is needed, but the water quality must not be too hard, otherwise it can also cause leaves to wilt.

4. Fertilization problem: If gardenia lacks nutrients, it can also cause leaves to wilt, but fertilization should be moderate and not excessive. During the plant's growing period, fertilize reasonably along with watering.

5. Pests and diseases: Gardenia is prone to harm from aphids, whiteflies, scale insects, etc. Therefore, attention should be paid to pest prevention, and regular treatment should be carried out to avoid the leaves being damaged.

How should gardenia be grown properly?

1. Potting soil: Gardenia is an indicator flower for acidic soil, with a suitable pH of 5 to 6. For cultivation soil, leaf mold, peat soil, or composted sawdust plus half garden soil can be used. Do not use old wall soil or coal cinder. Using commercially available clivia soil is more convenient and practical.

2. Watering: Gardenia likes moist soil and relatively high air humidity. During the growing period from April to September, the potting soil should be kept moist. Usually, water when the potting soil turns pale, and water thoroughly each time. However, after flower buds appear, watering should not be excessive to avoid bud drop.

3. Fertilization: Gardenia is a fertilizer-loving plant. Add 3% decomposed cake fertilizer to the culture soil as a base fertilizer. During the growing season, water once a week with alum fertilizer water made by composting cake fertilizer and ferrous sulfate. During the bud stage, watering once or twice with a 0.1% potassium dihydrogen phosphate aqueous solution can make the flowers larger and the fragrance richer.

4. Light: Gardenia likes light and can also grow in semi-shade for a long time, but the flowering branches are longer and there are fewer flowers. Except for shading needed during strong midday light from July to August and during the winter dormant period, it generally needs to be kept in sunlight for abundant flowers and lush leaves.

5. Pruning: After gardenia blooms each year, prune lightly, cutting off inner branches and diseased or weak branches, and shorten individual leggy branches. But remember that gardenia must not have the branch tips shortened in spring, otherwise it will not bloom that year.

6. Repotting: For gardenia, repotting in March in spring is better. After taking it out of the pot, cut off some old roots, shake off half of the old soil, plant it in the pot with new soil, then water thoroughly, place it in a warm semi-shaded place, and keep it in sunlight once new buds sprout.

7. Overwintering: In the Qinling area of China, gardenia can overwinter outdoors, but potted gardenia roots will be damaged after a severe winter. The potted flower can be placed in a cold room at around 5°C to make it dormant, protect the root system well, and place it in a windproof, sunny place to overwinter. In spring, it recovers quickly and blooms early.
